for example using a recorded speech waveform as source for the vocoder to trigger the fmx engine.

Any sound can be used as the source (input) to the Vocoder. Recall the Performance called "Chilled Vocoder" - this is an example of a Drum Kit with Arpeggio acting as the input. The input could be any PART, the A/D Input (is traditional but you can use anything).

Hint: The Vocoder is not an effect on the Input, rather it encodes the Input on the Synth sound.

The source for the vocoder is called the "modulator". You can see when selecting modulator that a pop-up window shows - and if you press the the icon at the lower-right of this pop-up (looks like a 4-column, 6-row pattern of horizontal lines):

= = = =
= = = =
= = = =

Then this will expand to all options where you see Part1-Part16, A/D, Master, or Off as options. Master would be the entire output of the performance and not any one single part.

If you want to setup your own from scratch:

1) Physical Button Press (BP) [CATEGORY SEARCH] Note: physical buttons are the (sometimes) amber or blue colored buttons. NOT touchscreen.
2) Touchscreen (TS): "Init", then "Init Normal (AWM2)"
3) BP: [ENTER]
4) BP: Number A [1] (select part 1, button is also labeled "PART SELECT" and "1/1")
5) BP: [EDIT] Note: instead of steps 4+5, you could also touch the part #1 and use the touchscreen to select the "Edit" option
7) TS: Ensure the lower-left "Common" square is hilighted with a blue background. Touch this if not.
8) TS: Select menu "Effect" -> "InsA"
9) TS: Touch "Type" and select "Misc > Vocoder". You may have to press the down arrow "/" at the bottom of the popup list to show the "Misc" category.
10) BP: [ENTER]
11) TS: "Modulator" touch and set to "Part 2". As explained in the top of the message, use press the 4x6 grid icon to see all options or it may seem like there are no options.
12) BP: [ENTER]

You'll notice that pressing keys now makes no sound. That's because there is no modulator. This is the same as if you were not talking into the microphone of a microphone based vocoder. Of course, no sound comes out when you are not inputting a signal. This is normal. Lets setup the modulator.

13) BP: [PERFORMANCE] (HOME)
14) TS: Press the "[+]" for PART 2 in order to add a new part which will be the modulator
15) I did a search (magnifying glass icon) for "FM" and selected "FM - What Else" as the PART used. Really, just about anything could be used but keep in mind some preset PARTs are velocity sensitive because they are a piece of a performance that uses multiple parts at different velocity ranges. In other words, make sure your modulating source is going to sound over the entire velocity range either by picking a good starting point, or going back into the part and adjusting the velocity response.
16) [ENTER]
For me, this brings me back to the home screen automatically and I see "FM - What Else" as PART 2

You'll notice there may be a vocoder buried in the mix. Lets get rid of the "FM - What Else" modulator from sounding out the output - since this is the main issue.

17) Select part 2 to edit either by:
BP: Number A [2], [EDIT]
or
TS: Touch "FM - What Else" of PART2 and touch "Edit" from popup
18) TS: Select menu "Effect" -> "Routing"
19) TS: Touch "Part Output" (lower-right area) and set to "Off"

Now you've created a vocoder performance with PART1 (the default piano sound) as the carrier and PART2 as the modulator.

For you, PART1 would be your FM-X PART (instead of the piano sound) and PART2 would be the recorded sample (instead of the "FM What Else" sound).

I was searching through, before, for something built-in with vocals. I thought some of the drum kits might have some misc. vocal "cheese". I didn't find any, but I should have just consulted the data list.

G3 and G#3 of T's Hip Hop kit has "Vocal Shout Yeah St" and "Vocal Shout Go".

Scat cycle may be used (part of jazz scat or latin vocals).

Also check out:

Waveform 1940: Day
Waveform 1941: So Long
and then there's all the syllables from 1943-2035. You can probably string together something with an ARP. Easier to make your own waveform - but there is some flexibility here with what's built-in.

Waveform 2595 is the "Vocal Shout Yeah" and Waveform 2596 is the "Vocal Shout Go" (which sounds more like "Caw").

I know not exactly all clear - but a set of items to experiment with.

When you are editing an element, clicking on the element name gives you the chance to search by name or number. Number may be easier - key in the number (like 1940) to load "Day" then use the DATA DIAL (spin clockwise) to listen to the other choices down the list.
