I don't know but this is usually based off of either supply and demand or economies of scale. Which boils down to more people buying them than expected or less people buying them than expected.

Sometimes competitive pressure force of the hand to try to meet some sales quota to compete with some other company in terms of market share.

Best bang for the buck I ever spent on anything in my life. The gift that keeps on giving, its pretty deep, and you get out of it, what you put in. A true players board with amazing tweakability live. Sounds Fantastic to these ol ears. Preaching to the choir here. :D

Hello 66 (best I can do!) - it's Sod's Law. Anything I want to buy is always a borderline-impossible price ... but when I come to sell it, it's not worth my time. I have a music room full of old stuff it's not worth the trouble trying to sell. It's clear Yamaha are not selling enough Montages - if they were, the last thing they'd do is reduce the price. So they're well over-stocked. But I don't regret buying my 7 ... it's by far the most usable and versatile synth I've ever bought (and I guess I've had most of 'em).

More of a function of fluctuating currency. Euro to Dollar has moved from 1.1 to 1.2, take that into account and it's not that much of a change in price.

I have mine now for 2 years = 730 days.
So for less then 50 cents a day I was able to play and study the currently best synthesizer available.
And I am still discovering new possibilities of sound creation. Worth every penny.
I am looking forward to the next (modified/updated/improved) edition.
When can we expect a sneek preview?

Jan, Did yours fall off the back of a truck (730 days @ 50c = $365.00 ??) :o
I thought I got a good bargain buying a new Montage 7 for AUD$3 999.
After I bought it (last store one) it's now currently unavailable and the price has been jacked up to AUD$5 999!!
Other stores here still advertise for AUD$4 499 but nil store stock.

Dont think the demand is that great because everyone is after VA or analog synths these days, FM programming is quite a hit and miss for most people while others are saying the AWM2 engine being too “outdated”.

I pre-ordered my Montage 8 over two years ago for 4000 euro. As an early adapter, full of faith in this product.
When, after 2 years, prices go down 10% I am just grateful for having been able to enjoy my instrument these last 2 years for only 50c a day.
(That is the difference of prices between June 2016 and June 2018.)
My point: why would one complain when the deal gets better? My head-start was well worth the price difference.
Please feel free to wait for a better deal, like a second hand machine, when I will trade-in mine for the new Montage X.
