MONTAGE M SynthTips: A Great Resource for MODX M users

These MONTAGE M SynthTips videos show common (and uncommon!) features and will help you get the most out of your synth. Because MODX M is built on the same platform as MONTAGE M you’ll be able to follow along and learn about important features.

Soundmondo

Soundmondo is a free social sound sharing service that allows users to discover, share and organize sounds. You can access Soundmondo in the follow ways:

  • On Mac, PC and Android, you can access Soundmondo through the Google Chrome web browser available here. You must use this browser because it has a specific API called WebMIDI that allows you to connect your MODX M to the computer via USB directly.
  • iOS users can download the Soundmondo app here. You will need an Apple Lightning to USB Adaptor or USB C to USB connector to connect to your iOS device.

Connecting MODX M

MODX M ’s USB TO HOST port connects MIDI and audio to a computer. This bi-directional USB communication offers production possibilities like:

  • Recording and playing back MIDI sequences from a DAW or iOS device.
  • Recording and playing back multichannel audio from MODX M to a DAW.
  • Playing, monitoring and synchronizing MODX M with ESP (Expanded Softsynth Plugin) for MODX M. NOTE: ESP will be available early 2026. Check back for more information.
  • Playing and monitoring the audio output of other virtual instruments from a computer or iOS device through MODX M ’s audio outputs.

Driver Download and Information

MODX M isn’t just an amazing synthesizer—It’s a great MIDI controller and audio interface too. Use the knobs, faders, and transport control for mixing audio and controlling softsynths. Additionally, you can record individual MODX M Parts to a DAW as separate stereo tracks. MODX M is also a powerful DAW controller. You can do all this by installing the Yamaha-Steinberg USB Driver. Download the driver for your computer type below:

Follow the instructions in the driver download package for installation to your Mac or PC.

Hardware and Software Setup

Connect MODX M ’s USB TO HOST port to your computer’s USB port using a “Type A to Type B” or “Type A to Type C” cable depending on your computer (the same as most printers use):

To connect to an iOS device, you’ll need an appropriate adaptor for devices with an older Apple Lightning connection. Note that you won’t need a driver for iOS devices and the audio connection is stereo only.

DAW Remote

MODX M can function as a DAW remote with support for Cubase, Logic™, ProTools™ and Live™. Accessing this feature is a simple as pressing the [DAW REMOTE] button on the front panel (in the yellow square below):

When you configure MODX M as a DAW remote you can use the faders and knobs on the left for volume and stereo panning. The track names appear both in the touchscreen and the Quick Edit screen above the faders and knobs:
