On the MODX M you have the PART buttons that can easily work for that purpose. On the Fantom it was literally a matter of seconds to be up and running sequencer on any parts. Yamaha should consider this.

There's still folks that don't want to hook up a computer when inspiration comes. Sometimes you just have your keyboard plugged in at practice with no tethered device. I know when I created a user ARP on my MO I was at practice in someone's living room and got an arp knocked out with the surgical sequencer as the other members took a smoke break.

The trend was not to have anything but feedback carved out a slight improvement. Many want the other scraps that fell off the plate to get picked up again despite what Yamaha's roadmap is and what may justify it.

I'm happy to see those voice their wishes. We'll see what develops (or doesn't).

I contend that they could do it with the latest M versions. Add the fully functional sequencer, that is. They have prior code that could be made to fit fairly easily, buttons exist to record, edit, step, save, screen, can already handle patterns, etc…. I can’t believe a specific type missing chip is the issue as to why not.

We agree that, being an editing and non-real time function, it seems unlikely any 'chip' would be an issue.

Our assessment is that adding sequencing to the synth would be 'swimming upstream'. Everything is pointing in the other direction.

1. New Montage M model

2. New Montage M ESP softsynth - pc app superceding the old 'Connect' software

3. New Modx M model

4. New Modx M ESP softsynth

5. extensive resources being spent of ESP fixes and MIDI 2.0 support

All of our sources think the PC side will be expanded to handle functionality such as sequencing. That functionality really has little to do with the job that a synth is needed for. The focus of a synth is generally real-time audio processing. Things like editing and sequencing can mostly be done 'off line'.

That 'prior code' you mention is old tech. Any solution needs to give the user much more, and better, control and much finer granularity. PC based multi-window software on large screens is much better suited for that type of problem.

Hasn’t anyone heard of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”? Or better yet don’t delete it until you’ve asked your customers what they think of the idea first. It would be really awesome if they asked every one of us how we use their gear. And not just their keyboards. 43+ years of IT experience and I still can’t let go! Somebody shoot me.

I love my new MODX M6! I’d love it even more if it had a fully functional sequencer! You can’t do what you can do with Yamaha Synths on any other brand. I already looked into all of them.

I'm not quite sure why more surgical editing wasn't pursued since this has been fairly consistently brought up as a weakness in the current implementation versus the past Motif/MO sequencers. And for the past MO line, this was done on a "tiny" LCD screen including MOX and MOXF. Even Motif XF with it's larger screen didn't have touch - so Montage M/MODXM has a chance to "one up" the sequencer of the past. Montage/MODX started out trying to "sell" that sequencers and sampling on-board a keyboard are two things best done on a computer and therefore fine to get rid of. After losing that argument on the sequencer, they should have went "all in" on the sequencer. At least the argument for getting rid of the sampler capabilities is holding up and there isn't outcry to bring that. Sample Robot was sort of a play to offer an alternative although not a 1:1 replacement similar to pattern sequencer versus the previous "full blown" sequencer.

Hi

My thoughts, after 10 years of Montage/MODX series since 2016, I believe many users still prefer quick fixes on their music using the sequencer functionality where you can edit each note and effect velocity, erasing them etc, rather than needing to always hook up to iPad, laptops for the editing. At least for me, I feel it is troublesome. U know, when u are in the midst of making music and u hv to hook up to iPad to make changes in the play. It was so much easier and intuitive when I was using MOX6 to edit my music in the past. I miss this function. Hopefully Yamaha will look into this again for their next system update.
