Try changing the extension from 'Y2U' to 'Y2L' and loading it as a library file. 

Or save a user file of your current user bank, load the FM-Xpansion user file, save a Library file (of the FM-Xpansion content), reload your saved user file to restore the original content, then load the FM-Xpansion library you created.

Kind of a lot of hoops to jump through but it's the "front door" method Yamaha expected you to use.  It could be very simple if they just saved a content file and asked you if you want to load the content into the Library or User section or otherwise had to two operations (load Library/Load User) that allow using the same file.  There's really a needless wall between Library and User files and it creates an unnecessary burden on the user.   

My usual gripe that the filesystem is a weakness of Yamaha synthesizers.  The devs still haven't taken up the challenge/task to streamline.

That worked, thanks a lot. Now I can delete all my 'Y2U' files.

Here's the key point - a USER file is NOT a library file, and vice versa. The contents are different. See p.378 of the 

Yes - you can rename the file and it will get loaded as the other type BUT the contents of a user file includes Utility Settings, Quick Setup settings and all Live Set user banks.

A library file doesn't include utility or quick setup settings and only includes one Live Set bank.

We haven't tested whether a load of a renamed user file also loads the utility and quick setup settings and all live set user banks or not. If it does then your current settings will get overwritten. 

In your backup/archive area you may want to leave the files with their correct names and extensions and just rename them when you copy them to a USB stick for loading.

Obviously you need to do what works best for you.

Renaming can work but is not recommended. 

Doing it the intended/official way is a hassle.

I didn't receive the email with links to those free expansions after registering a few days ago. Did you get the email right after registering?

Ive never had an email, i just download them from the website. Once you registered there will be a link to click on. in my case for some reason it said something about get Sample robot (i know what this is), but it took me to the page with the 4 free add ons.

Thanks for the info. I tried that and saw the Sample Robot download but not the 4 free add-ons. I found various registration pages (e.g. 1, 2). One of them had the free AN-Xpansion but not the others (FM & VP1). I was also able to find some others <a href=" removed link " target="_blank" rel="noopener">here but the FM and VP1 expansions weren't free. So if you still have the registration link, could you share it?

When I tried the page that mentions getting these packages for free after registering, there was briefly a message that said the software will be available soon then the page redirected to a generic product page that didn't have any links to the software.  Maybe something is in flux or otherwise broken.  Wouldn't be the first time.

This is the link i got to just now, with all 4 sound packs, but i don’t know if you can use it as i had to log in using my account, go to my products and follow the links from there.
