Even though I think it's a hack job, I wish there would be a more open approach where a software interface would be presented to an android, iOS, and PC (Windows/MacOS) where the embedded PC for driving the GUI could be fully replaced by apps folks (3rd party pro and DIY).  I know Camelot can kind of kludgey work this way but SysEx+CC (and other MIDI) can't really "get to" everything in the same way perhaps the ESP port is evolving to.   I say hack job because it wouldn't be integrated in the keyboard using an external device but I (and perhaps others) already carry a device for sheet music reminders and it would be great to double as a touch interface to the keyboard.   With the proper interface, this could be a total clone of the internal GUI realized on a larger tablet or something that would allow 32 Performances in a category search "skin".  Or even other ideas in different directions.   Right now someone could do a lot with just MIDI but not everything and abandoning a strict serial (MIDI) interface to the host would speed up everything even, I imagine, versus MIDI 2.0.

Since Yamaha already has "classic" buttons in the interface, I don't see why Perf category search couldn't or shouldn't get similar treatment.  But I also think there may be an opportunity to even one-up (productive/sensible) rehash.

I get your MIDI question now.  The no zone portion was important for me to follow.  I don't know what you can do to bend stock Performances this round.  Reading specs only gets you so far and there's usually nuance to Yamaha's choices.  Meaning off-menu rules that need to be explained and memorized beyond the docs.

Having a way to search for and 'find' a performance without it automatically becoming the current performance would be nice. Just because I use cateogory search to look thru things doesn't mean I want it to replace the performance I'm currently using.

So maybe having to use the 'Enter' button to actually do the replacement would be useful.

I couldn't seem to edit the previous reply, so picking up on that here...  I think the way to go here is, when selecting a category, NO Performance is automatically selected... you simply view the list, and the sound changes when you select something. That eliminates the need for an extra confirmation step, and also removes any ambiguity of something looking like it is active when it is not.

Aha! Thanks for the tip. Turns out it is the data dial that selects and changes the performance.

... there's like a 30 second window after you save a message for edits.  I guess this cuts down on revisionist history but it seems like giving 30 minutes to edit would serve the same purpose and allow for catching typos and such without the panic race to beat the clock.
