On "All 9 Bars! +" (which has more than 8 elements in its single part), how do you adjust the volume of the ninth drawbar (element #9)? Slider 1 in Element mode with 9-16 selected (using the shift button, making it flash blue) does not seem to do it. I can navigate to the Element 9 screen, but while I found two level/volume parameters there, neither actually does this. What's the trick? And is there a way to assign it to a knob/superknob?
Also, the rotary speed toggle is tapping the on-screen ribbon controller. Is there a way to assign the speed toggle function to a foot switch?
Lastly, what does the symbol with the 4 green horizontal bars and a down arrow mean? I've highlighted it with the yellow arrow on the attached screen shot. (Is there an icon legend in the manual somewhere that I missed?)
You can assign speed to a foot switch if you have a latching one so you don't have to hold it down. And then I'd try assigning the foot switch to the CC that matches the ribbon as a first try. If that doesn't work then you'd reprogram the mod control source from ribbon to foot switch.
For the 9th drawbar I don't see this Performance so I can't really explore it but I'd see if that element level is a destination. If not, then I'd setup a super knob assignment to it. I'm not sure how elements above 8 work in detail so ... Experiment.
The icon I wonder if this is the indication that sliders are inverted. Somewhere there is a configuration parameter for this. Toggle it and see what happens with the icon.
Current Yamaha Synthesizers: Montage Classic 7, Motif XF6, S90XS, MO6, EX5R
Assign knob 8 is the 9th 'slider'. Check the control assignments and you'll find that on page 4 destination 15 is named 'Drbr 9 Volume' and assigns knob 8 to 'Element Level' and only element 9 is selected to 'opt in'.
You might want to select 'All' for the filter because there are some other control assignments with 'Element Level' as the destination and different elements participating.

I'm not sure you 'missed' it since the icons aren't really documented in a section of their own. But p.144 of the 'v300_K0' operation doc:
This icon indicates you can change the Performance in the order listed as
default in the Category Search screen, by using the Data dial, [INC/YES] button,
and [DEC/NO] button. This icon indicates you can change the Performance in the order of Live Set
slots shown on the selected Live Set screen, by using the Data dial, [INC/YES]
button, and [DEC/NO] button.
The first description is for the '4 green horizontal bars and a down arrow' while the second is for 'a grid of 16 blue squares and a right arrow'.
The icons are a visual reminder of what the data dial inc/dec buttons will do.
Also, the rotary speed toggle is tapping the on-screen ribbon controller. Is there a way to assign the speed toggle function to a foot switch?
Just FYI but 'Rotary Drive' is also assigned to the Mod Wheel and knob 4.
Assign knob 8 is the 9th 'slider'.
Thanks! I'm glad they didn't make the mistake of the Roland Fantom-0, where the 9th slider can only be adjusted via the screen interface.

I don't know what/where the 'v300_K0' doc is, but that's weird. Am I understanding correctly that the 4-green-bar thing is an ever-present functionless (and ambiguous) visual reminder of something that never behaves any differently? IOW, it doesn't do anything, nor inform you of the status of anything? I hadn't noticed it until I happened to be on the organ performance, but yeah, it appears to be omnipresent.
(I haven't come across the other one you mention, the grid of 16 blue squares with an arrow.)
There's some other weird visual stuff. Like, I don't understand why some fields have diagonal tiger stripes, which seem to indicate nothing, they just make the contents harder to read. Or maybe there is something being communicated, that I have not recognized?

I don't know what/where the 'v300_K0' doc is, but that's weird.
Page numbers change from doc version to doc version so I try to remember to provide both. Otherwise people complain that the page I cited doesn't have what I said it did but they are looking at a different doc version.
That 'v300_K0' was my shorthand for 'MONTAGE-M_operation_manual_En_v300_K0.pdf'. All the docs can be downloaded from: https://usa.yamaha.com/products/music_production/synthesizers/montagem/downloads.html
If you hover the mouse over the download link it will show you the full file name in a status bar at the bottom of the browser. Except the html doc doesn't do that. You have to go by the date at the bottom of the screens '10/2025'. The html versions and pdf versions don't always get updated at the same time but then the html version don't have page numbers anyway.

That is another one of those Yamaha things that if you don't know that it is there you may never know it is there or why.
See p.490 (I have my glasses on now) that shows the Utility->Settings->System screen and at the bottom right there is a 'Perf Inc/Dec' param. There are two choices: Default (which is performance - don't ask me why they didn't just say 'Perf') and Live Set.
(I haven't come across the other one you mention, the grid of 16 blue squares with an arrow.)
Perf Inc/Dec
Sets the operation mode for using the Data dial, [INC/YES] button, and [DEC/NO] button to
select a Performance on the Home screen.
Settings: Default, Live Set
The default is 'Default' so on the performance screen you see the green bar icon and the Ind/Dec select performances. If you set the utility setting to 'Live Set' you will see the blue grid and the Ind/Dec will change the live set. For live set it will keep going through all slots of all pages of all banks just like it was one big list. So you can get lost as to where you are when you use the Live Set button. In other words it will change banks and pages on you.
But if you start on the bank/page/slot you want then you can use Ind/Dec to move slot by slot without having to have the Live Set screen showing.

I don't want to presume I know what 'tiger stripes' you refer to or what you were looking at but the nearest thing that comes to mind are params that are read-only and can't be 'directly' changed by the user.
Two examples. On the Utility->Settings->Sound screen (p.476) the 'Tune param shows +0.0 and the box next to it has stripes and shows 440.0Hz. You can't select or change the striped value directly but if you change the 'Tune' value the striped value will change to show you the frequency the 'Tune' value represents.
Second - on the FM-X edit->part->op->Form/Freq screen (p.396) at the bottom the 'Ratio' param has stripes and shows 1.0 so you can't select/change it directly. But if you change the 'Coarse' or 'Fine' value the 'Ratio' value will change.
It reminds me of some of those Stengelese sayings of Casey Stengle. Once you know the above things (blue squares, tiger stripes) are there you know they are there. But if you don't you won't. Trust me on this one - the doc reference in no way suggested that someone could have figured that out for themselves.
One more from the previous post, before going on to the new...
Just FYI but 'Rotary Drive' is also assigned to the Mod Wheel and knob 4.
Knob 4 is indeed distortion, but mod wheel is doing something else, sounds like some combination of things.
Anyway, onward...
Oops! Page 114 - not 144.I did think maybe you meant the Montage manual, so I checked, but since the page # didn't match, I figured it must be something else! (BTW, I have the MODX M, not Montage M.)...

Bingo! Yup, the stripes seem to indicate a parameter that is editable, but NOT by directly tapping on it.
Your Stenglese seems very appropriate. Thanks again!
I cleaned my glasses and checked again

Yep - the screen is right there on page 490.
BTW, get those glasses checked... I'm seeing it on p. 492!
My hypotheses would be that what you are seeing on p.492 is the 'description' of the 'Prf Inc/Dec' param. But hey, what's two pages among musicians. Take a couple pages out of any pop song and who is going to notice?
