A small amount of side-to-side play is typical for the keybed in the modx7.

But excessive wobbling that has developed since you had it is not normal. Nor should it be creating a loud noise.

Only you can decide if it is 'worth getting serviced' since you will be without the unit during the service.

To take best advantage of the warranty, and service, prepare one or two specific examples for the service center to use to reproduce the problem. Otherwise they may try different keys than the ones you use.

Not sure but we think the keys on that model are molded in clusters of 3-5 keys rather than being individual keys. If so then if a 'cluster' molding has an issue it could affect all of the keys in that black but other blocks may be ok.

You should also be proactive and test EVERY key, both white and black, and document your findings in a one page email/note to the service center. That way you can ask the service people to check all key blocks by particularly the ones you highlight as having the issue.

Not sure if you transport your keyboard or not.  If you do, you may want to think if what the keyboard is carried in could provide more protection during transit.

The MO series over the years has "always" been the series that ends up with damaged or noisy keys in the music store from my experience.  And this is what I have used as an unscientific gauge of keybed reliability/resilience.  So relative to the Montage, I would say the MO series overall seems more prone to degradation over time.

I see, it makes sense that the keyboard would be lesser quality than Montage due to the price difference.  I would still expect a high quality keybed in a 2k product (not saying that it's not but the keys are distracting).  I do not transport the keyboard, it's been in my studio since I got it less than a year ago.

If I worked at Yamaha I'd be interested in studying more about this case since it seems your usage is fairly light compared to road warriors.  I would want the MO series to survive studio use without the keybed becoming a distraction due to clanks and wiggles.

You may want to file an idea on Ideascale.  The idea would be to design a keybed for MODX that doesn't peter out from normal studio-only use and describe all of the problems you've noticed.

The R&D (research and development) team reads the Ideascale entries on a weekly basis and this would likely be something they send straight to the engineering and sustaining teams.  Idea-lly (cough) they would figure out some flaw and fix it so new keybeds are better even for replacement parts and can fix your keyboard with the new part.  It takes a while to hard tool parts and it's expensive so I don't know how realistic it is - but one can dream.

Of course they may come up with a bandaid fix which is more realistic.  Glue, tape, felt, washer, etc.

I'd do the Ideascale thing more or less in parallel with looking into warranty exchange with the retailer I bought it from.  Warranty repair is an option but it's always rolling the dice with (in my opinion) lesser odds than going for an exchange for new if that's available.
