MODXM8 Not sending MIDI

I was sent here by Yamaha tech support.  My brand new MODXM8 will not send midi to my DAW or my MPC LiveII.  I followed the instructions in the manual even though this is usually a plug n play feature. It appears that the issue is with the MIDI USB button located under Utility-Settings-MIDI.  When I click the USB button it is highlighted showing on but I don't think it is really switching from MIDI to USB MIDI.  If I leave this screen and come back it has automatically reverted back to MIDI.  Looking for help from Yamaha experts on this issue.

Hello, welcome to the forum.

To solve your issue you'll need to describe how you want to work with these devices. Here's a few things to look for

  • First off, let's determine that the MIDI In/Out setting does indeed operate properly. You set MIDI I/O as either MIDI or USB in Utility/Settings/MIDI I/O. What is selected appears in blue. It will remain in either state once it is set. Try it: Choose USB (USB highlighted in BLUE), then just press LIVE SET, select a few Performances, etc, then go back to MIDI I/O Utility. It should still have USB selected. Now select MIDI (MIDI highlighted in BLUE). Do the same thing: Press LIVE SET, select a few Performances then go back to MIDI I/O Utility. It should still have MIDI selected.

When set to USB MIDI transmission: MODX M is a 4 Port MIDI device when connecting to a DAW via USB.

  • Port 1 is dedicated to MODX M internal tone generator
  • Port 2 is for DAW Remote Control
  • Port 3 is MIDI thru for a connected external device
  • Port 4 is for ESP (when it becomes available)

When using MODX M via USB connection to a computer you'll select Port 3 for connecting MPC in this scenario. You'd connect MPC LiveII MIDI I/O on MODX M and select Port 3 in the DAW for transmission to MPC. See page 64 if the MODX M Operation Manual about this.

When set to MIDI transmission: This uses the physical MIDI connection, not USB. You would connect MPC LiveII to the MIDI I/O of MODX M. Then you'll need to Select a Part in Performance and set Part Mode to EXTERNAL under Performance Edit -> Part X (X = Parts 1-16)->Common->General/Pitch->Zone Settings. There you can set the Tx/Rx Ch for the external device. See Page 62 in the MODX M Operation Manual.

Also, I recommend updating to OS v1.10 located here. There are a few things addressed, one is improved USB stability when connected to a DAW.

Thank you for your reply.

All 4 ports show up in Logic Pro. Logic pro is not receiving midi signal using port 1 or port 3. When I connect the MODXM directly to my MPC Live, all 4 ports show up as well but no midi is being received when using any port.

I want to be able to record notes via midi from my MODXM into Logic pro and logic pro play back the tone generator on the MODX.  This was plug and play on my MODX+. Can't get it to work at all on my MODXM.

Just to clarify, I use my MPC as a stand alone device.  It is not connected to my computer.  Also, I updated the OS as soon as I took it out of the box.

I am on version 1.1 and I have had issues with MIDI out working reliably. At first I had no Midi out, but somehow when I came back to the instrument a bit later, the MIDI out was working. This morning, the MIDI out is not. The 4 devices appear in Ableton, however, there is no midi activity detected by ableton as I play the keyboard. I have tried all 4 ports fwiw.

USB Midi is selected in Utility confirmed.

Everyone I have communicated with at Yamaha support seems to think I need a DAW tutorial and its not their problem. Thank you for posting you are having the same issues.

Update: I forgot I had been using a USB isolator dongle on my old MODX USB connection to break ground loops. When I removed the dongle Ableton was receiving midi from the MODX M8. I then tried a different USB isolator dongle and it still works, so I think that may have been the problem.

New developments. Downloaded an app called Midi Wrench per Yamaha support and connected the MODXM to my phone and it did receive midi signals from the MODXM. I could even play the MODXM from my phone.

Used the same USB cable to plug into my Mac Studio and nothing. Nothing when plugged into my MPC Live either.  Why would usb midi work on my phone but not on my computer or MPC?

Maybe try, if not already there, Legacy MIDI mode.  This will run in full MIDI 1.0 without any MIDI 2.0 extensions.  Just a way to try to clear some hurdles.

The Mac Studio - I'm assuming you're running MODXM set to generic driver mode.  That's what I think the phone would need.  That should work with the Mac Studio too.

I don't know that you need anything in particular but it always helps to find someone that has a similar setup as yours who can explain how they got it to work.  That's usually what I would do - get it working on a Macbook which would more-or-less replicate your Studio.  I'd have to know what operating system you're running (by name or version number).  And then I'd put that version in a VM if it was newer than what I am running and go and see how it works out.

... but, whoever is running through this will need to be someone else right now.  Can't replicate the MODXM (see signature).

I had to turn on Legacy Mode, too. MIDI tracing for notes and remote buttons revealed:

MIDI tracing for PLAY:
```
46530279 NoteOn chn 1 94 127
46530279 NoteOn chn 1 94 127
46533475 NoteOff chn 1 94 64
46533476 NoteOff chn 1 94 64
```

When I press RECORD:
```
46667594 NoteOn chn 1 95 127
46667594 NoteOn chn 1 95 127
46672130 NoteOff chn 1 95 64
46672130 NoteOff chn 1 95 64
```

As if the buttons were pushed twice. Legacy mode fixed this.
