Hello,
I just got my Montage M6 and am trying to figure out something basic but can't seem to find it. I would just like to use the M6 as a MIDI controller for my external synths. How exactly do I do that?
Thanks.
You create 'external' parts on the M6 that transmit on the channel your external device expects to receive on and then connect the two instruments using a MIDI or USB cable.
Do you have past experience with synths or MIDI controllers? If not see the section 'Connecting external MIDI instruments' on p.94 in the latest
OS 3.0 'v300_I0' version of the operation manual
https://usa.yamaha.com/products/music_production/synthesizers/montagem/downloads.html
That page has links to all of the latest docs and also a link to the recently released OS 3.0 update. If you just got your M6 it may not have the latest OS version on it. On the M6 the 'Utility->Settings->System' screen shows the OS version at the bottom.
Perform a user backup first if you have anything you need to save and then follow the instructions in the updater download file to update the OS.
P.94 discusses the basic process:
1. create a part
2. edit the part and navigate to the 'General/Pitch->Zone Settings' screen shown on p.95
3. change the part from 'Internal' to 'External' and set the channel to what your external instrument expects to receive on.
Read through that doc section and give it a try. Then if you need specific help post back and provide ALL of the steps you have taken including the cabling.
It is usually best to keep things as simple as possible until you get things working. So You might start by loading an Init Normal(AWM2) performance and then copying part 1 to part 2.
Make part 2 the external part. Now you can only hear part 1 when you play but you should be able to hear part 2 on the external instrument.
Later you can configure the M6 to transmit program change commands to the external instrument to change the sound on the external instrument when you load the performance on the M6. See p.267 for reference and a graphic that shows what the screen for an 'external' part setting looks like.
Hi, congratulations for your brand new Montage M6, to complete the great Toby answer, you can watch my tutorial video about using master mode, it's record with a VSTi and will apply to any rack or synth too.

That video is part of my montage M tutorial playlist, do not hesitate to watch other topics where you can find interest.
Hope that's help
@joel - What do you mean by the term 'Master Mode' in the title of the video? We aren't aware of any such 'mode' on our M8X and there is no more 'Zone Master' for the M models.
Probably stating use of the Montage M as a master controller as opposed to a slave or standalone. Likely more of a mode or paradigm in the sense of MIDI topology than anything to do with Montage-specific nomenclature.

You may be right but we wanted to double-check. Joel is so sharp it wouldn't surprise us at all if he found something in the M models, or in an article/doc, we haven't come across yet. Seems that thing has a few nooks and crannies that show themselves at the oddest of times.
Pretty sure Joel is, at times, under the NDA umbrella so odds are good he knows more than he lets on! Not that he would admit it, of course.
Hi Toby, hi Jason.
For this Master topic, i have no NDA to respect, there is no hidden things, Master mode name come from the Motif series, on Montage M it's the sum of the master zone screen settings + Receive transmit screen settings that i show in the video, i call it in the old way "master mode", that's simply that.
