Hi,
I used the FM converter to convert a few .syx files from the DX7 into .x7l file format. Using the ESP plugin, I've tried to load these, and it correctly sees the .x7l as a library file.
However, when I click "load", it tells me there is an illegal file name. This happens with all .syx files I have tried.
Has anyone got this to work?
Thanks,
Simon
P.S. Could have posted in the FM converter forum, but I think this is a Montage M issue
Your question reads a little weird but I think I know what you mean.

I think what you mean here is that you are loading X7L files into ESP and each X7L, which was generated by a different SYX file using the FM converter, is failing to load because ESP complains the X7L is an illegal file name.
Does this restate the issue properly?

The FM converter creates a file YFMC_export_xxxxxxxx.zip - are you unzipping this file to get the x7l file (YFMC_export.x7l)? I believe you are but worth running through the whole process. And then I would try renaming the file so x7l (lowercase) is changed to X7L (uppercase). Seems like a silly suggestion but I have no experience with ESP to know how rigid it is with filenames. Wouldn't be the first time that case matters with Yamaha.

Yes, exactly!

You, sir, are a bl**dy genius! And actually I should say a big thanks generally because you always seem to be around helping people, and we're lucky to have you!
For the avoidance of all doubt, renaming it to .X7L in capitals worked. What a silly bug!
Yeah, it's disappointing that software Yamaha has provided (the FM converter) is incompatible with other software Yamaha provides (ESP) because ESP doesn't deal with lowercase extensions.
Implicitly, the FM Converter extension is defining that case doesn't matter. Then ESP violates this. And then no one tested this possibility even 3 or so releases in for ESP.
Software is certainly an area that has room for improvement at Yamaha.
At least "now you know..." So everyone can be sure to rename files if Sample Robot or any other software decides to spit out extensions with a case ESP doesn't like.
Clearly this is an ESP bug.

You might consider using the 'Contact Us' link at the bottom of the page to report the issue directly to Yamaha Support. Or submit an IdeaScale here: https://yamahasynth.ideascale.com/c/yamahasynth/campaigns/2160/stage/Ideate/ideas/unspecified
I put the IdeaScale 2nd since asking for a 'bug' to be fixed isn't really an 'enhancement' request.
I believe identifying bugs and requesting they get fixed is an excellent idea and a good fit for Ideascale given the audience at Yamaha who reviews these.

We agree - but our opinion remains that bugs that affect the ability to use the instrument need a higher priority. That is why our first suggestion what that OP use the 'Contact Us' link. Our experience has been Blake responds quickly when there is a report of a potential bug that is easily reproducible and he is in a position to make Ben (who usually does the IdeaScale reviews) aware.
Thanks both. I did report it on the Contact Us link. I did also sign up for IdeaScale but haven't posted there yet.
