I keep getting 'Update Not Found' when trying to update to 3.01.  I successfully updated to 3.0 using the same thumb drive but try as I might, nothing but the error. Any thoughts?

That message typically means what it says - it can't find the 'file' it is looking for.

Did you put the 3.01 file in the same place that the 3.0 file was in?

Did you use the SMALL update file or the large one?

Some of these won't apply to you but may help others. So just throwing stuff to see if anything sticks on the wall:

1. The OS 3.01 update is ONLY for Montage M models - not the Modx M - the Modx M update is 3.0

2. There are two versions of OS 3.01 update - the first listed is 75.4MB and is ONLY for those that have already updated to the OS 3.0 version released last June. The other is the full 4GB version and must be used for those that have NOT updated to 3.0

3. Try a different USB stick formatted on the Montage M itself. USB thumb drives are notoriously fickle on Yamaha instruments. If it worked once it should be ok but you never know.

4. Double check that you are using the correct update file, that it has the correct name and that it is located in the ROOT of the stick. It isn't possible to tell update file versions apart by name alone so it is easy to grab the wrong one since you download and upzip it to a PC and then copy it to a USB stick. As far as we know all update files use the same name so the OS is hardcoded to look for that name in the root of the stick.

5. Try downloading the file again. The download is a zip so if you can upzip it the contents should be ok but again you never know. Yamaha doesn't provide a checksum to validate the downloads.

6. Try the large update if the one that failed is the small one.

Those are the only things that come to mind.

If you haven't done it, then make sure the previous firmware update file is removed from the USB stick.  As you mentioned you're using the same stick.

All files have the same name '8O42OS_.PGM' - so there can only be one file with the correct name on the stick

After doing an update we rename the file on the stick to reflect the version (e.g. OS30w). Then we copy the new update file to the stick for the load.

As alluded earlier our assumption is that the boot code in the OS assumes one name for the update file and looks for it in the root folder of the root partition. We haven't tested but it is possible that the M models will work with a usb drive that has multiple partitions even though it only uses the main one while the previous 'classic' models may not work with a stick at all if it has multiple partitions. Don't know.

We've never had any problems having multiple files or folders on a stick as long as the files we load are in the root.

Pilot error completely! I downloaded the MONTAGE 3.01 updater... for my MODXM6!!!  Doh... enough said. 😆 

Thanks for the update - glad you found the problem.

It's easy to get the wrong file or wrong version. That is specifically why we mentioned that Yamaha gives all update files for a given model the same name - if you get them mixed up you may not be able to figure out why.

No - there is no 'subscribe' list or means for automatic notification of updates. Often, but not always, Yamaha releases updates just before or at the two big trade shows: NAMM in January and Superbooth in June.

Hopefully the next OS update will be around the end of the year just prior to, or at NAMM.

Updated, or new, documentation is often released at the same time as an OS update. If you hold the mouse over the download link the status bar at the bottom will show the name of the download file.

There is usually a suffix on the file that will change for new files. For example the current Operation Manual for Montage M models is:

The 'K0' suffix will likely change to 'L0' when a new version is released.

You will need to check one of the Official Yamaha sites periodically to see when an update is released. 

These forums are the place to create threads asking for help/info on how to use a current, or past product. It is common for a user to think the product is missing functionality to do what the user wants to do. But quite often the product simply does it differently than what the user expects.

Yamaha encourages users to make suggestions for new functionality, new products and improvements for existing functionality and have created the IdeaScale site where you can do that.

If you look at the 'Montage M' campaign at that site you will see

1. there have been 454 ideas submitted

2. 117 are in the 'Ideate' stage (initial submission)

3. 4 are in 'Refine' where Yamaha has ask for additional info

4. 268 are in 'Assessment' for the Yamaha development team to review for possible implementation

5. 61 are in 'Reserve' which means they are NOT currently being considered though they may be in the future

6. 4 are 'Complete' - this one can be misleading because Yamaha seldom updates the Stage after they actually implement a suggestion. So there are definitely more than 4 that have been completed but the stat doesn't show it.

When you post a thread here, or on IdeaScale, the more info you provide the more attention it will get. Just saying you want more flute sounds isn't specific enough to act on. Saying you want a flute sound like the one on the Korg model xyz wind instrument #73 allows someone to actually listen to that sound to know what you are looking for.
