I am considering upgrading from my MODX 8+ to the M, but I am hoping I can get an answer regarding if ESP does what I want it to ...
My DAW is Logic Pro. I want to use one sound from my MODX keyboard in 1 track, and then use a different sound from the MODX keyboard on another track. I would llike both of those sounds / tracks to be editable. The issue I have been having is that in order to have 2 different sounds from the keyboard in the MODX 8+ is that I have to save the Midi track as Audio, but then I can't edit that track any more.
By using ESP, do I have access to all of the M series sounds in my DAW where they are being added as a software instrument where I can use multiple sounds on different tracks and are editable?
Thank you for any assistance
We don't use Logic Pro so can't speak to that specific DAW. Have you tested with the free Cubase that came with your Modx+?
Cubase doesn't have that issue.
One workaround would be to load TWO instances of the ESP and take one track from each of them.
If possible you need to do tests yourself to make sure it will meet your needs. That may mean actually buying a unit and then registering it and downloading ESP to do the test.
ESP can be a resource hog especially if your pc isn't configured properly.
The Modx M is able to load user and library files from the Modx+ so before you trade-in/sell you old instrument make sure you have created files that save your content. Ideally you should ask to keep your Modx+ for an extra day just so you can make sure your content gets transferred.
Assuming one "sound" occupies one Part in your MODX (not M) you would have 15 more slots (Parts) to place up to 16 "sounds". Some sounds are expensive and take up a lot of Parts but there is no preset sound that takes up more than half of the available Parts.
If your goal is 2 at a time then your non M should be able to handle that unless your sounds are taking up all 16 Parts for each.
The problem that you run into with MODX is the lack of audio channels so you couldn't record the audio for all Parts at once. You'd have to take two passes (sending MIDI only to one sound or other a time) or you'd have to record main in one pass and not have the audio tracks separated. This is only if your using too many sounds to record in one pass.
If you have only two sounds and one sound doesn't take more than 4 Parts then you could record stereo 4 Parts out the 4 USB stereo pairs then the other Part on Main L/R.
If you have all one Part sounds then you could record 5 sounds at a time.
The limitation would be effects since USB outputs strip out some effects expecting you'll place those effects back in after you mix everything in the DAW.
Not sure what was driving the issue of not being able to record two sounds at the same time with the non M MODX - there could be something since there are real caveats that you may have chosen don't work for you.
The architecture of ESP is very similar to the MODX since the MODX M inherits lots of things from the previous generation. So, not in all cases, but in many those same behaviors will exist in the new gear.
I think it's important to dig in more into what exactly was causing not recording two sounds on two tracks at once to understand more fully how this does or doesn't apply to the M and ESP.
And, yes, if your hardware handles it then ESP can run two instances. With folks complaining about resource utilization with just one instance I wouldn't necessarily bet the farm on this. YMMV. Hopefully as time goes on optimization will change this story.

Hello Jason, is this something you would be willing to work with on personally. I have had the Non M MODX for about 9 months, and still have not been able to crack this. I would be willing to pay you as a tutor if I could figure this out. My email is redrockraphael@yahoo.com. Thank you
Hi,
In GarageBand you can open a second track and load a second instance of ESP.
Each track is separate but will play together when you want it.
I have not tried in Logic, but I'm sure it is the same.
Jim
I don't really entertain the prospect of earning money for this. I'd rather get this sorted out in the forum so others can benefit.
