I just have to say that Yamaha Steinberg Usb driver V3.17 is not compatible with Tahoe 16.0.1 which says in document from Yamaha downloads from October. 9th 2025 that Driver 3.1.7 are compatible. I can’t get the audio input to turn up in Sound and Midi app. When I turn on generic driver the audio input shows up.
My synth is Montage M. I have both M1 and M2 Mac machines.

I'm a new Montage M owner and using Tahoe 26.0.1.  The 3.17 driver installed OK for me, but you have to jump through some hoops to enable legacy system extensions (I think that's what it was called).  It was detailed in the instructions.  I don't really like to do that, but have previously had to do this for the RME drivers before they moved to driverkit.

Would be good if Yamaha/Steinberg would give some indication if they will also move to driverkit.

Hi,

The Mac I use with the Montage is an M1 Macbook Pro.

Cheers,

Simon

Looks like there's other Tahoe users here to help.  Usually, I'd setup a VM to test out the new OS works OK (or not) for others.  My installed OS is currently Monterey but I've tested Ventura.   And when I was on Big Sur (which was fairly recent) I tested Monterey first in a VM to make sure all was good.  Lately there's been enough other Mac users with the actual installed OS to help each other get past the gotchas.

My worry is that Apple will discontinue support for these outdated drivers and we'll find that some of the Montage M functionality doesn't work with the latest Mac OS.  I hope Yamaha have a plan!

Presumably the main issue is access to the audio interface.  I'm guessing the ESP plugin might still work just over MIDI?

Sorry Claes for the slight sidetrack.  If I knew how to help you, I would.

Steinberg website claims the USB drivers support MacOS 26.x and do not mention the earlier 16.x variant of Tahoe before they decided to 26 across the board (iOS/MacOS).  The release notes, as is often the case, doesn't claim the same range of OS support as the 3.1.7 release notes only cover up to 14.x.  Hopefully they can get their documentation in order so there isn't a conflict between the web site's claims and the release notes.

Hi Claes,

I will check it tonight but I'm pretty sure it was vendor mode.

Vendor mode uses the Steinberg drivers and Generic mode does not.  Earlier tech talks explicitly recommend generic drivers for Macs.  In S06E02 Blake mentions he's using generic mode.  The presentation seems to pigeonhole the Vendor driver mainly for certain versions of Windows (or vintage of Windows PC) for maintaining audio quality but Mac is recommend to use the Generic driver.

So, there may be no need at all to mind if Steinberg is going to maintain support for the driver given the recommendation is to not use them with Mac.   At least for Montage M and MODX M which both have full audio and MIDI capabilities on Mac using the generic driver.

Montage M and MODX M which both have full audio and MIDI capabilities on Mac using the generic driver. That's good to hear. Thanks!

Oh that's great news!

I checked my Montage Claes and I'm on Vendor mode.

I was trying to avoid installing the drivers and I'm sure I tried Generic mode, but was unable to get my Mac to see the Montage at all until I got the Steinberg drivers installed.  I was turning the air blue with remarks about Steinberg/Yamaha because those of us who use Macs generally chose the Mac because you don't have to mess with this sort of stuff!  So perhaps I wasn't as focused as I should have been (and my new toy wasn't working!).

Claes I'd be very interested to hear back if you can get everything working in Generic mode without Steinberg drivers!

Hi,
I have now tested with both Vender and Generic driver and with the Generic driver I can record audio with Logic and Cubase. When I try the Remote function I could not get it function with Cubase or Logic. Midi works as it should.
In Vender mode Montage don’t turn up in Midi & Sound app so I could’t record audio. I could not neither get the remote function to work properly. No function in Cubase and in Logic was the behaiver of the playhead chaotic. I have to shot off Logic to have it stopped. Midi works as it should.
My setting in Cubase for Remote control is perhaps not complet excellent.

Last night I uninstalled those Steinberg drivers from my Mac and switched to generic mode.  Works fine!  I have no idea why it didn't work for me originally.

Claes what do you mean by the remote function?

DAW REMOTE is a remote control mode that lets you use the controllers on your instrument to control a DAW on your computer. That could be what he was referring to.

See p.392 in the operations doc.
