On page 21 of the User Manual for MOXF8 there is a screen cap showing a capability to enter parameter numbers directly.

With NUM clearly shown on the bottom RH of the display.

Try as I might, I have been unable to get my display to show that configuration.

I've tried every key sequence that makes any sense.

Little help maybe please?

Welcome to the forum!

We don't have access to a MOXF so you may need to wait for someone who does to respond.

But we noticed some 'unusual' language on p.21 that raises a couple of questions:

1. 'For parameters having large value ranges' - does that mean that 'NUM' won't be shown for other params?

2. 'When the cursor is located on such a parameter' - also suggests that if the cursor is NOT on such a param then 'NUM' won't be shown.

What param do you have selected? What is it's value range? Have you tried other parameters?

Sorry we can't be of more help.

Thanks for reply All I'm trying to do is get to that screen as shown in the manual for now. So far, no one I've contacted seems to able to do it.

The large value range is for example the 7000+ onboard arpeggios. Page 21 indicates you can enter the number directly from this screen.

Only certain parameters will you find the '<NUM]' flag at the bottom.  In the second row from the bottom on the far right showing if you press [SF2] then this will engage number entry using the below LCD buttons.

If you go to the song mode/ record / and press the button for setup [F1] and cursor over to Meas(ure) then you should start to be in the zone for seeing this.

The song start measure is one place where the [SF6] NUM feature is found (before I typed SF2 which is a typo).  The reference manual also mentions song jobs use this feature.   The picture shows the quantization job and the implication is there may be several song jobs that can use this.

Apparently only song mode features use this.  There's an old thread here that mentions how few places this is utilized and the author wished firmware would allow number entry for many other parameters not supported.  The feedback from Yamaha was that enhanced GUI features come with the flagship (Motif XF)  and the cost reduced model (MODX) more or less wouldn't try to compete with the more expensive model.  It's certainly not going to get any firmware updates now.

So if you're having problems finding the very few places where this feature exists -- that's normal and by design.

Thanks for your assistance! I did get the display configured as per my original post. More idle curiosity than anything else. That being said I can now see I won't be using it any time soon.

I'm still a novice at this stuff and was suffering under the mistaken impression I could use this to somehow assign an Arpeggio to a Voice. I see now that was incorrect and I will use the Voice and Performance settings for setup as I was before.

Thanks again!

If you are new to the instrument make sure you are using the latest OS since any previous owner may not have updated to it.

Thanks for the tip. I'm still using the original factory firmware version 1.03.0 and Boot TU1.01. So I assume I download to a USB stick and install via the USB port on my piano?

While I think to ask...and at the risk of appearing obtuse. My instrument seems to work just fine for me. I don't use it for connection to CuBase or anything like that. Is there another compelling reason to update? I'm a firm member of the" if it ain't broke don't fix it" brigade LOL.

That being said if there are more voices, features etc offered in the upgrades I will certainly upgrade. Just in case I will download all the software in case it is NLA at some point.

Only you can decide if there is a reason to update. But consider that since that OS version there have been at least THREE updates released.

Is there another compelling reason to update? I'm a firm member of the" if it ain't broke don't fix it" brigade LOL.

The most compelling reason is that when you complain to Yamaha, or a service center, about an issue the first thing they will check is the OS version. And if it isn't the latest one they won't take your problem report seriously because for all they know a later OS update has already fixed it.

In addition, one of the main reasons Yamaha does an update is because it IS broke - so they fixed it! LOL.

Some downloads are minor with only bug fixes, others have new functionality.

The download zip file will include a readme with instructions on how to update your instrument.

And the download page provides a minimal list of changes which may, or may not, be important to you.

A better question to consider is WHY NOT update when you know it has likely fixed 'something'?

Just in case I will download all the software in case it is NLA at some point.

Good habit to get into. Yamaha removes older updates from the download page when they release a new one.

Our recommendation is that WHENEVER there is a new OS update for you instrument you should visit the download page and download EVERYTHING again: all documentation, latest USB drivers, etc.

Seems like there are some updates that fixes a couple performance problems (freezes, sluggish polyphony related response, etc).  You can read the firmware release notes which detail all of this on your own.

There's also iOS, driver, or other connectivity related updates that I doubt would matter for you.

I'm not going to advocate you do anything.  There's not much that's going to make any difference if you're happy with the instrument as it is.

It is always YOUR decision as to whether to update.

You can 'shoot yourself in the foot' no matter what you do.

If you don't update any problem you run into might have been fixed by the update you chose not to do.

On the flip side if you do the update in the middle of a series of gigs and the update fails for some reason you can really put yourself in a bind.

So the more cautious advice would be to keep your instrument up to date as new updates are released. But schedule the update for a window of time that allows you to recover if something goes wrong.

Yeah - it sounds kind of 'wishy washy' when you put it like that but what are you gonna do!
