I have a chance to pick up a used MX49 V1 at a great price, less than half the price of a new MX49 V2. I noticed in the description of the free Vintage Synths for MX V2 soundset in the Yamaha Music Production guide it says “The focus of this soundset is set to Synthesizer Voices. Many Voices include the FM-Waveforms that are contained in the ROM of the MX V2”. Are there different waveforms found only in the V2?
The reference to 'set to Synthesizer Voices' is just saying the emphasis of the pack is on providing 'voices' as opposed to providing 'performances'. It would then be up to the user to create any desired performances that utilize those voices.
The two main diffs between V1 and V2 are 1) V2 supports class compliant MIDI USB and 2) V2 allows you to connect to an iPad and use the FM Essential app. But for #2 you will need an Apple Camera Kit adapter and you will need to 'unlock' the FM Essential app in order to use it.
The reference to 'FM-Waveforms that are contained. . .' refers to the waveforms and hybrid (AWM2, FM) performances that the 'Vintage Synths for MX V2' pack provides for you to load into the MX49.
1. the MX49 models have never had an FM 'engine'
2. the FM Essential app provides an FM engine component but the app requires USB connection to the MX49
3. the 'Vintage Synths for MX V2' pack includes new waveforms and 'hybrid' performances that use FM voices provided by the FM Essential app.
So both V1 and V2 versions of MX49 have the same 'factory delivered' set of waveforms. And, though I don't know for sure, you can probably , if you want, load the 'Vintage Synths for MX V2' pack contents onto a V1.
Then the V1 could use any of the new waveforms but it won't be able to play the hybrid performances.
Since a Modx or Modx+ is going to have a powerful FM-X engine and plenty of performances that demo and use it you might consider getting the cheaper V1 and putting the money you save towards a modern day synth.
This video should help in understanding things. The forum sometimes removes links so remove the hyphens from the below to create a valid url.

Thx for the answer Toby
A big advantage of the MX is that you won't have to worry about any cost adder for the sound libraries or spend time researching that.
