To redirect one MIDI channel (channel 9) to an external instrument, I wish include a Sysex in a MIDI song to select a specific User MIDI Setting on PSR-SX600.

Is this possible ?

I need help. Thanks

Data List doc doesn't appear to expose 'User MIDI Setting' to allow SysEx to be used. It could be that the specific parameter(s) needed just haven't been included in the doc for some reason or it may not be possible to access that functionality using SysEx.

Use the 'Contact Us' link at the bottom right of this page to send your question directly to Yamaha Support.  Yamaha Support has a good track record for answering this type of question because it is direct and to the point.

We suggest you use the exact title as the subject of the email message: 'RE: Is this possible to select User MIDI Setting with Sysex on PSR-SX600 ?'

And include both the text of you question above and a link to the forum thread. You might also include a reference to p.99 of the Reference manual - https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/1/1346911/psrsx600_en_rm_b0.pdf

That is the page that presents the User MIDI Setting info.

FYI - We're not aware of any instrument that has Data List support for settings like that. For example, on the Montage M8X, the latest high-end synth, the UI has 3 'Quick Setup' templates a user can select but a bulk dump of the performance doesn't include any parameters that would allow SysEx to be used to select a template.

A 'template' is just a saved set of parameter values. When you select a template it just acts as a shortcut to make all of those parameter changes for you without you having to make them one by one.

So a possible workaround is to include several SysEx commands in that song that, individually, make all of the changes the template makes.

On that same M8X that is possible since the underlying parameters the template uses are in the performance dump. We don't know if all the parameters your templates use can be changed by SysEx.

If you have particular parameters that your template would change you should specifically ask in your email to support if that template is exposed in the data list and can be changed using SysEx.

Please post back any reply you get from Yamaha Support.

Thank you for this reply.

I'll ask Yamaha support if a MIDI Settings configuration can be selected via SYSEX.

In the meantime, I found an alternative solution to my problem:
1) I select a standard MIDI Settings configuration: Song
2) I use tip C.26 from this excellent FAQ <a href=" removed link " target="_blank" rel="noopener"> removed link to trick my PSR-SX600 into not playing the notes on track 9 of my MIDI file.

I'm trying to find a simple, universal solution to prepare for our concerts because our keyboardist uses a slightly different device (PSR-SX700).

You must create your own 'universal solution'.

I'm trying to find a simple, universal solution to prepare for our concerts because our keyboardist uses a slightly different device (PSR-SX700).

You may want to wait until AFTER you have found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow - LOL!

Unfortunately what you seek doesn't exist. Even on the latest synth, Montage M8X, the information needed to reliably duplicate an instrument setup, even on the exact same model, just isn't documented anywhere.

We have previously submitted two IdeaScale suggestions related to the need for a 'universal solution':

https://yamahasynth.ideascale.com/c/yamahasynth/idea/186804

https://yamahasynth.ideascale.com/c/yamahasynth/idea/186806

The 1st above, idea #3265 is titled 'Montage M - Provide 100% backup/restore functionality that will make 2 instruments IDENTICAL in function'.

The 2nd, idea #3266 is titled ':Montage M - provide documentation describing all steps needed to configure a target M to be identical to a sounce M'.

Two of the main issues you need to solve:

1. Different types of backups (full, library, user) save and restore different things but none of them save ALL possible system settings

2. Factory resets will provide a consistent starting point but then you face fact #1 that there will still need to be some manual settings made

CAVEAT - the above is when both source and target instruments are EXACTLY the same model AND on the same OS version.

When the OS versions are different there may be other issues, such as new settings in a later OS that change the way things work.

When the source/target models are different there are all kinds of things that can cause problems.

TEST - TEST - TEST

The best advice we can offer is to create a WRITTEN set of instructions for someone to follow to setup/configure the instrument to be used at the impending venue. Those instructions may need to be different for each venue.

A. Turn the target instrument OFF and manually possible all switches, knobs, sliders and other panel controls to your predetermined starting position

B. Backup and then factory reset the target machine if possible to get to the best possible known starting point

C. Connect the necessary cabling to the correct ports using the correct cable types (T/S versus TRS), USB2 versus USB3, etc

D. Connect the correct controllers  or other external devices (mixers, etc) to the correct ports

E. Load a prepared backup, user, library file(s) onto the freshly reset (step #A) instrument

F. Manually make any global settings that the above steps won't make for you - you will need to determine what parameters, or global instrument settings these are.

G. Do as thorough a test 'run through' as possible to make sure things are setup properly.

H. Reset the position of all switches, knobs, sliders, pedals, etc to their starting positions.

KEY POINT TO REMEMBER - anything you touch or move on the instrument will likely change SOMETHING away from the value it had before.

Good luck. Please post back if you discover other things to take into account in the pursuit of that 'universal solution'!
