AN1X System Error (Firmware Update reasonable?)

Hello,

I have a question about a possible firmware update of an old AN1X synthesizer.
When I started the synthesizer some days ago, only Japanese and Greek signs were showing up on the display of the synthesizer. Basically, everything on the display is replaced by these signs. Even if I turn a knob, just wrong characters are displayed instead of digits. However, it is not completely random. It looks like every character is just misplaced (and it is not real Japanese or Greek language, just incoherent characters). A factory reset was not helping. Since I cannot read the system information, I assume it must be firmware version 1.00 or 1.01 according to the date I bought the synthesizer.

My question is now: Is it reasonable to try a firmware replacement (to v1.04) or could this error be somewhere else?
There are still firmware EPROMs available on EBay or other platforms. Is it worth a try or waste of money? I assume that fixing it in a service center will not be possible because of its age, alas.

Regards,
Raphael

Not sure why you assume getting it fixed in an authorized service center is not an option, I contend it is your BEST option.

The AN1X speaks neither Japanese nor Greek... it sounds as if you have a memory issue - could be as simple as a battery, but you will need to take it to an authorized service center. It is not a firmware issue.

Hello,

Thank you for your quick reply. I made an inquiry at a local service center.
But I, fear that they will require an analyzing fee and cannot guarantee a success, as experienced with other manufacturers.
Let’s see…
But thank you anyway.

Raphael

That would not be unusual, they need to see it, determine what's the issue, then and only then can they tell if it can be fixed... seems the natural order of things.

You can call Yamaha and ask to speak to a service technician, they will know the symptom and can probably save you that part of it. And they can also tell you if the parts are still available. Call.
