What is "Base Performance"?

Hello BM - I use that term as it fits my work pattern, but it's any Performance that occupies Part 1 (maybe several others as well depending on the Performance!). Right now, for example, it's the CFX Concert, which I am attempting to clarify (don't laugh!) with the use of an electric piano as a layer. I have many potentially useful electric pianos (all User Performances), but their volume overwhelms the CFX, so the first job is to get the volume under control - but that inevitably means the EP is added to the CFX, and I can't just dump that EP by selecting another any more. You will know that volume is critical, so altering all the volumes before I start doesn't work!

I just thought - I could Mute that Part - but it would just go on repeating until I run out of Part slots. So a 'trick' or workaround would be good. If there is one, of course! I certainly couldn't think of one, as altering any parameter cancels out the ability to replace one EP with another just by tapping it in Category Search.

I think I see what you want to do.

Say you start with "CFX + FM EP" and want to substitute for the EP. You can try different EPs as follows:

Set the Super Knob to about 12 o'clock so you can hear both.
From the HOME screen:
Press the [PART CONTROL] button
In the screen touch the "Type/Name" for Part 5
The pop-in menu appears, select "Search"
Set the BANK as you desire
Set the ATTRIBUTE to "Single"
Set the Main to "Keyboard" > Sub to "Electric Piano"

You can now select, one after the other from the Electric Pianos using FADER 5 to adjust the tryout volume relative to the acoustic piano. This works because you selected [PART CONTROL] for your front panel Faders before engaging the Search.

If you wish to audition Multi Part Electric Pianos you would do as follows:
Start with "CFX + FM EP"
Touch the "Type/Name" box for Part 5 (FM EP)
When the pop-in appears select "Delete"
Answer OK

From the HOME screen, press [PART CONTROL]
touch the "+" in Part 5
Now the Category Search "Merge" function appears (Merge allows you to add Single or Multi Part programs to the current.
Again you can select from the listing one after the other, using the appropriate FADERs to adjust Part Volumes as you require.

Hello BM, and it has helped immeasurably, thank you. I have been able to modify your guidelines so that I can audition any Part with any 'Base' Performance, and adjust the relative volumes for initial balance without losing the audition capability. Works a treat! The secret lies in the 'Part Control' button, as you say! You are worth more than a Library full of technical manuals ...

Once you understand the lighted front panel, it gets easier. Here's what I mean... start from HOME.

The significant thing about HOME is the cursor highlights the Performance Name, and the upper [COMMON] button is lit.

Then you need to consider [PERFORMANCE CONTROL], on most programs this is lit, along with the upper [COMMON] button... the FADERs control Parts of the current Performance 1-8. If you select an individual Part by pressing a [PART SELECT] button, notice the FADERs now control the Elements (if AWM2) or the Operator's (if FM-X). This should start to make sense. Because selecting an individual Part now you have access to its individual building blocks. You can see the [PERFORMANCE CONTROL] button has a dotted line connected to the four rows of eight buttons - and this outlines their functions: PART SELECT, PART MUTE, MOTION SEQ SELECT, ARP SELECT.
** When you want the FADERs to act as pseudo-drawbars you obviously want them to be Element Levels - so on drawbar organ sounds you can/would store the Performance with the FADERs as Element Level!

[PART CONTROL] when lit, allows you to select any of the full sixteen Parts 1-16 using the top two rows together. When you select a Part 1-8 the FADERs Control Parts 1-8 or Parts 9-16 when one of them is selected. Notice that now the bottom two rows switch to ON/OFF buttons for Motion Sequences and Arps.

Only after a while does this start to connect and you start to rely on the lights as a valuable resource. Particularly when operating multiple Arpeggiators and Motion Sequences.

Hello BM - you have fired my interest in the panel lights! To me they just seemed to operate largely without any input or meaning to me, but watching them while following your instructions, they begin to make a pattern. The problem is that the Montage works several levels above my head, so I'm always struggling, but the results make it worth while! For example (and thanks to you) I see the relationship between the 'HOME' button and the 'Edit' function ... as you say, the panel talks to you - just have to learn the language!
