Can the Layer Part note range be different than the Main Part note range by using Master Keyboard and a MIDI cable out and in?

Here is the Issue: Is there a way directly or indirectly to set the note range of the Layer part to be different than the Main part? My goal is to have a piano Main part play the entire keyboard, with the Layer part orchestral strings limited to notes up to C3 and have the CC Pedal 2 control the volume of the Layer string part (I know how to set the CC Volume on the Layer part) only so that I can “mute” the strings when I want to just play the piano on the notes up to C3 without the strings (I will use strings (Layer) plus piano (Main) at those times when the below C3 notes play chords, but mute the strings during very fast piano runs with sustain that include notes below C3 where the strings sounds would otherwise blur).

My potential solution would be to set the Layer Part to strings, restrict the Layer note range from C-2 to C3 with the Layer volume controlled by CC2 set to volume and the split point at C3. But I can not find a way to set the Layer note range to be different than the Main part note range. Setting the strings to the Split part will not work because then the Main piano part will not play in the Split area.

But is this possible: to use the Master Keyboard setting, physically connect a MIDI cable out from the CP4 and back into the CP4, turn off Local Control and then assign Channel 1 to piano, Channel 2 to strings and the Receive Switch for Channel 2 to CC2 volume and the note range C-2 to C3.

I am reluctant to test this because I may damage the CP4. Therefore, any help/suggestions from someone more experienced than me would be greatly appreciated.
