Hey all o/

I just had a couple questions about possible functions on the Yamaha S08. Unfortunately I've never touched one, so mainly the information I'm looking is via skimming the manual and other information on the internet. I'm contemplating buying one primarily for the "Balanced Hammer Action" Yamaha features that I just love, as well as the sounds
Question 1
-How many sounds, or "Normal Voices" can you actually layer in a "Multi" on this synth? Is it limited to 2, or ideally what I'm looking for - could you layer 4?

Question 2
-I use a Motif ES8 at my church, and probably one of my favorite stock performances is the Dynasty patch, that has this grand orchestral voice, with timpani+cymbal sound settings at the lower octaves of keyboard that blends in with brass and strings ensemble.
-I realize that these synths are two different animals, but could I achieve something like this on the S08? And what functions should I use (e.g Note limit, split, etc). Please note that ideally I don't just want only a distinct timpani sound at the bottom, but blended in with the strings/brass layer, to make sort of a percussive "impact" sound.
-Or, could you have it triggered at a certain dynamic/velocity range, where it triggers timpani at mezzoforte, cymbals at fortissimo.

Question 3
-Can you separate the keyboard into different zones, rather than a two instrument split?

Mark,
Welcome to Yamaha Synth. You are asking about a keyboard that is 18 years ago, so forgive any rust on my responses.

As I recall, this was designed to be played one Part at a time, and it featured a 16-Part multitimbral layout capable of two Parts at a time from the keyboard, but able to work with an external sequencer. GM/XG compatible. It did not have a Performance mode... as I recall two sounds, Parts 1 and 2 could be layered or split.

The storage is to SmartMedia card which were cheap in 2002, (like any rare old technology, they may be hard to find).

The Balanced Hammer Action was most recently found on the S90 XS and the S70 XS (now discontinued) — which are fully capable from all of the programming things you mention. And they store to USB sticks (readily available and inexpensive).

If you hunt around you may still maybe able to find an S90 XS (88) or an S70 XS (76) in the market.

Oh 😛 - I didn't even realize it was 18 years ago!

Thank you, I guess I'll look for an S90 XS

The only current synth with Balanced Hammer Action is the MONTAGE8
