Expression Pedal on MOXF8

I bought an expression pedal. It is not useful for volume control because the potentiometer in the pedal is linear taper instead of audio. I read that most expression pedals are like this. That makes sense: audio taper is useful only for volume control and not good for anything else.

SO I plan to get a dedicated volume pedal, apply that to the output, and use the expression pedal for other things. The question now is how to turn off the default volume control function. It appears that I go to Utility mode and assign FC1 to be 004.

I hope that this works. I also wish Yamaha had a software option to treat the common linear taper expression pedal as though it were audio taper. That should be easy. Then I wouldn't have to have two pedals.

An Expression pedal works as a MIDI control. MIDI makes no sound... MIDI data is a series of coded messages that represent a musical performance. An Expression pedal sends channel message cc011 (Control Change) -this contributes to control over the output level of the sound created in response to the note-on data.

I'm not really sure what you are after... but a pedal you place after the Main Outputs of the synth is a Volume pedal in the literal sense. Expression is always a "MIDI" volume pedal... and is controlling virtual volume.

By assigning your Foot Controller to cc004, it now can be programmed to any of the available Controller Destinations on a per Voice basis. In the Data List booklet (PDF) you will find a list of the Controller Destinations.

I have the same problem. I'm trying to imitate a pedal steel guitar. That linear taper pot in the expression pedal just doesn't do it as a volume control. It controls the volume, but it doesn't do a swell very well. He seems to be saying that Yamaha doesn't offer software taper changes.

I have a volume pedal with audio taper that swells just fine, but it's not stereo and I'm hooked on that. So I guess I gotta buy a third pedal, or solder a new potentiometer into what I have.
