I have read through dozens of forums, but no one seem to have the exact problem as I do. This is about connecting Motif xs8 to Cubase 8.5 via FireWire. After installing Yamaha Steinberg_fw_v166x64 in Windows 10 everything works perfect. The problem appears after re- or upstart of the computer, no connection. The only work-around I have been able to use is un-installing the FW v166x64 driver and then re-installing it. Then it will work till next re-start of the computer.
Here are the details:

Windows 10 (Ultimate)
Windows Firewall on (tried to load without firewall on, nothing changed)
Webroot Security (tried to load with all Webroot items turned off, no change)
IEEE 1394 host controller with OHCI Compliant Host Controller driver (Legacy) Tried both Legacy and latest version of drivers, no change

With a fresh install of Yamaha Steinberg_fw_v166x64:
In Device manager I see:
mLAN16E2
FW Bus
FW WDM Audio
FW WDM MIDI

After re-start WDM Audio and WDM MIDI are missing

No ! signs in Device Manager

Motif XS8:
Firmware version 1.60.1

In Yamaha Steinberg FW Driver control panel:
Firmware version IEEE1394: V1.08

I have replaced FW cables as well.

Hopefully can help me here, getting tired of un-installing and then re-installing the FW driver everytime to make this work

Hi Niels,
Welcome to YamahaSynth.com. We moved your post here to the "Legacy" Forum heading because it concerns a Motif XS and mLAN/FW.

There is a definite conflict we can see in your IEEE 1394 firmware. I'm not sure if it is the cause of your problem but it does stick out as being an incorrect version. The Motif xs8 came with the mLAN16e2 FireWire Ports built-in and should be using firmware 1.07

IEEE 1394 Firmware 1.08 is only necessary for the FW16E expansion board and only for the Motif XF. It should not be listed for download with the Motif XS downloads.

There should be a WARNING on the Motif XF download page, or it was wrongly posted where XS only data should appear (sorry about that). But the built-in Ports on the XS8 came fully functional and require firmware 1.07. They do not require version 1.08

You should roll this back, and see if your issue does not disappear.
Let us know.

Always have the Motif XS8 powered on before launching Cubase.
There maybe something preventing the negotiation of the audio/MIDI setup. As you can imagine, the driver should be able to re-establish the setup without you having to re-install the data. Something is either overriding the driver... do you have another program and driver that needs to renegotiate audio or MIDI configurations?

But before you go there, see if 1.07 doesn't change things. Let us know.

Thank you for your quick reply Bad Mister!! I rolled back the IEEE 1394 firmware to 1.07 successfully and confirmed, but sadly it did not resolve the problem. I also did the un - reinstall routine and rebooted the computer a couple of times, still the same problem. The only difference I noticed was the windows chime for device plug-in or removal does not ring with the 1.07

As far as other programs that could be our "unsub" are CC Adobe Premiere, After Effects and Audition, all set to MME not ASIO
Davinci Resolve 12.5 is also on the list, but I'm new to that program and I don't seem to find any options for audio here.

I do have an UR 242 that I tried to use awhile back but never really worked for me, I prefer the FW connection. I see it's plugged in but not turned on.

Thank you again for your interest in helping me!!

Okay. That was a long shot, but one more item we need to check.

Please download and install the "Motif XS EXTENSION v1.6.1 for Windows". This has some of the negotiating tools in it, that setup the XS inside Cubase. And since you did not mention it, we want to be sure it is in play.

If that does not help, we'll move to a deeper checklist. Let us know.

Motif XS EXTENSION v1.6.1 was already installed, but as a precaution I un-installed and then re-installed it (since we rolled back the IEEE 1394 1.08 to 1.07 and I have so much experience with un- and reinstalling). Still no change.

Yes, usually reinstalling is grasping at straws and rarely solves an issue. But we wind up trying it because, the first time we installed it, it actually did work. Although it doesn't fix things -it doesn't hurt either. The issue has to be a conflict that has developed somewhere along the line.

The WDM stuff deals with using the XS as your computer interface for non-DAW functions. The functions Cubase will use can be set within Cubase. Perhaps we should concentrate on getting the Audio and MIDI working inside Cubase and leave the Windows media options for last.

OK, let me know what to do. Once I have the FW driver reinstalled and open Cubase 8.5 audio inputs are connected, audio outputs are connected, studio is not connected as I don't need that feature.
The Motif xs VST is online and fully functional
Where else do I need to look?

I don't know if we got disconnected, but my issue still remains. Can you help with further trouble shoot, please?

Sounds like everything is working and fully functional. As I read this, the issue is something else (unknown to me, at least) prevents you from closing Cubase and getting back to a fully functional state.

"The problem appears after re- or upstart of the computer, no connection."

It has nothing to do with the Motif XS, the FW, or Cubase 8.5 (as best as I can tell)... but is something on your computer that prevents the normal start up... Do you have any other ideas... Games, some kind of program - perhaps that came with the computer that will not release the component.

I'm sorry, I'm not a computer tech - You may want to check with Customer Support (not that they do Windows tech support) but they may have more experience with customers having this type of restart issue. It is clearly something not allowing normal start up.

---------------------------------------------

One thing does occur to me... that we have not discussed.
The Motif XS must be set to use the FW Driver - and this status must be STORED:

Make sure your Motif XS is set to use the proper IEEE1394 Driver.
__ If you are using the Yamaha Steinberg Firewire Driver, go to [UTILITY] > [F1] GENERAL > [SF4] AUTO LOAD > make sure the IEEE1394 Driver = FW. If not, select FW, then press [STORE] and reboot the Motif XS.

This condition is STORED in XS's System memory - and is backed up in your ALL data files. So be very careful when loading an ALL data file that you do not inadvertently reset this parameter. When loading ALL data files - get in the habit of loading ALL WITHOUT SYSTEM so that you do not change your SYSTEM settings.

Sadly yes, FW is selected as described and no games on the computer. I guess I'm doomed to un-install and re-install every time I want to use my Motif :(((
