Help converting .X6S output

I've had my MOXF8 for several years now, and am semi-proficient at playing and saving multi-track songs to a USB drive and/or the MOXF. This works fine for songs that I then intend to play on the MOX, but only leaves me with a '.X6S' file on my USB drive - which is unusable anywhere else.

I have read somewhere (a different forum I think) that it is possible to save a file as a standard midi file (.SMF) from the MOX. Is this actually possible or was I misinformed? If it is possible, how? I never have an option to save a song as a different type, and the only saves are as noted, '.X6S'.

If it is not possible, could I use the USB drive to transport my songs to a different computer and work on them there - perhaps in Cubase? (I don't have the space/room/ability to hook the MOX directly to a computer and work with Cubase) In other words, would Cubase recognize the .X6S format and be able to open/work on it? I don't currently have Cubase, but would be willing to purchase it if it does.

What I am trying to do is ultimately convert my songs to a digital format (.wav, .mp3, etc.) that I can use with/behind a video presentation.

I apologize in advance if this question has been asked and answered a million times before. I looked through the first several pages of topics and didn't see a similar question. And thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Compatibility:

https://usa.yamaha.com/products/music_production/synthesizers/modx/compatibility.html

Extracted from the page (and only the X6 series compatible file types):

File Type on MOXF Extension on MOXF Contents
All .X6A User Voice, User Performance, User Arpeggio, User Waveform
AllVoice (All Voice) .X6V User Voice, User Waveform
AllArp (All Arpeggio) .X6G User Arpeggio
AllWaveform (All Waveform) .X6W User Waveform

You can see that X6S is not a compatible file type. X6S are song files and do not directly convert requiring saving instead as .MID files.

The compatibility list hasn't been updated that I'm aware since the pattern sequencer was added. That said, the latest supplementary manual does not mention song file compatibility either.

Thanks for the reply, Jason. The file type .X6S is how the MOXF8 saves a song file and I have no knowledge of how to save a song as any other file type (even .MID) as you suggest. As I said in the op, I've seen on some forum that you can save song files as a .SMF (standard midi) but have no idea how to go about that either.

I can work with a .smf or .mid file, so how would I go about saving to one of those formats instead of the .X6S?

Source: http://www.motifator.com/index.php/support/view/moving_a_mox6_mox8_song_into_a_cubase_project

SAVE MOX SONG as a SMF
Connect a USB stick to the USB “To Device” port on the back of the MOX6/MOX8
Press [FILE]
Press [SF2] SAVE
Setup TYPE = SMF
Move the cursor down between the brackets and give your file a Name.
Press [SF1] EXEC
You can now select the SONG that you want to transfer by number/name
Press [SF1] EXEC

This will create a file with the extension .MID

... and you may want to read through the entire thread to see some additional "warnings" about how this somewhat distills the data.

Thank you - I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Buried amongst the "TYPE" settings was [SMF] - which saved the song as a midi (.MID). I have obviously wheeled past that setting numerous times before, as I know I have looked at all the types. Somehow I missed it repeatedly. Thanks for the advice Jason, and thanks for your suggestion(s) as well, Bill.

Now to read about the MOXF's midi distillation problems...
