How does one use a Montage to change the program on another keyboard?

On a Kurzweil Setup I set the midi "Bank Mode" to "Ctrl 32" which allows me to change the bank and program numbers on my Korg. The Kurz and the Korg can then play the sounds from either keyboard. Each number setup on the Kurz changes a numbered Combo on the Korg. I do not see how this can be done on a Montage. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hello Mark - you are attempting what I don't need - to drive the Montage rather than use it as a driver. I believe that to achieve your ends you will have to go into the 'Zones' facility on the Montage, which I don't understand at all - but I'm hoping that someone (perhaps Bad Mister) can illuminate the scene. I drive my Korg M3-73, and that in turn drives my Tyros 3 ... I have just rigged a cassette recorder into the mixer output to record the entire mix, and am considering feeding the recorded sound into the A/D inputs of the Montage as Audio to see if it will record that. Or sample it - I don't think the Montage has any sampling capacity, surprisingly for a synth. I may be wrong there ...

The link to the answer on the Zone Master feature shows you how MONTAGE acts as a master keyboard controller. It sends both MSB and LSB values for Bank Select, and then a Program Change number.

Unfortunately talking about your Korg and Kurzweil here is not helpful unless you explain how they work... we don't know how "CTRL 32" works.
MSB is Control Change 0 (values range from 000-127)
LSB is Control Change 32 (values range from 000-127)
Yamaha uses both numbers to define the Bank, followed by a Program Change Number (000-127) to select a program within the Bank as defined by both MSB and LSB.

What message do you want/need to send from MONTAGE? That we can help you with...

@ Rod

Hello Mark - you are attempting what I don't need ...

A good reason to start your own thread... since this is Not what you need, it would be inappropriate to discuss it here.

Hello BM - you're right, it wouldn't be - more or less the opposite to what Mark intends! I'll start a new thread when I've found out what I actually want to know! Bit more experimenting first ... so far, so good ...

I did not mean to confuse the issue by explaining how I use other keyboards. I was trying to explain the midi number used for Bank Control. The Montage changes programs but not banks. Midi Ctrl 32 is what is intended to change banks and programs and would be placed in the LSB parameter. The MSB parameter would be the number of the bank that should change.

To be clear, I need to know how to get the Montage to change the bank of another keyboard.
Thanks.

Bad Mister... Midi controls are universal. Ctrl 32 is used for program changes regardless of keyboard brand. Midi Ctrl 64 is sustain and so on...

To be clear, I need to know how to get the Montage to change the bank of another keyboard.

Lets say I want the MONTAGE Performance to change an external synth module/keybd with a BANK SELECT and PROGRAM CHANGE.

Call up the Performance you wish to configure
Press [UTILITY], go to “Settings” > “Advanced”
Set the ZONE MASTER = ON

Press [EXIT] to return to your Performance
Press [EDIT]
Next you want to select a PART, if you are going to be using this setup to control both INTERNAL and EXTERNAL, you may want to have separate Part slots for each. (Recommended). If necessary, touch the “+” to ADD a new Part slot which you will setup for the EXTERNAL Part.
You must select a placeholder Internal Part... which we will deactivate in the Zone Settings...

Select that Part for editing
Touch “Part Settings” > “Zone Settings”
Turn the ZONE = On
Turn the INT SW = Off
You can set a MIDI Channel to transmit Out on

You have the ability to activate Bank Select, Program Change, Volume, Pan ... if you need to send any or all of these.
You’ll need the MSB number and the LSB number (place under Bank Select), Insert the MIDI program number ...

In the screen shot above the GM bank is MSB/LSB = 000/000, and the first MIDI Program Number is Concert Grand (piano).

Thank you Bad Mister and before I wrote my question I had already done as is in your screen shot. The programs will change but not the banks. On my Kurz and Korg I use Ctrl 32 In the Bank Select. On the Montage I tried putting the value 32 in both the MSB and LSB with no bank change.

No, no... I'm not a Korg, nor a Kurzweil user but they, like all manufacturers of MIDI compatible products, must use the MSB and LSB numbers or some version of these.

MSB is Most Significant Byte, and is Control Change 0 (cc0)
LSB is Least Significant Byte, and is Control Change 32 (cc32)

That I'm confident is what is meant by the '32', not that the value is 32 but that it is a number for cc32.

For example, in the MONTAGE the every PERFORMANCE is identified by an MSB an LSB and a Program Change number...
From the HOME screen touch the box that has the PERFORMANCE name to see the pop-in menu
Touch the option "Property"
This will display the Category, Sub Category, Bank, Bank Select MSB/LSB and Program Change.

Here is the "CFX + FM EP" property screen:

So translated cc0, the MSB, would have a value of 064
cc32, the LSB, would have a value of 0

Try sending 0 for the MSB and then for the LSB set 1
See if that selects the first bank.

My property box for the same performance indicates Bank Select: MSB 63; LSB 64; Prg Change 001; These are the parameters for the internal performances, correct? I need to change the bank of an external keyboard. I read your in depth reply to another asking the same question and followed to the letter every step w/o success. Please excuse me for this and... I have been using synths since one sound was contained in a one foot square box. I used multiple midi keyboards in the 90s and this should be an easy task. I did upgrade the firmware but that did not fix the problem of not being able to change the bank on another keyboard.

I used the internal Yamaha sound as an example format for Bank Selection.

Try sending 0 for the MSB and then for the LSB set 1
See if that selects the first bank.

Perhaps Ctrl 32 means that the value you send for the LSB will correspond to the Bank number. (Just a guess).

Thanks Bad Mister. I have tried numerous combinations to try and change the bank with no success. I called Yamaha tech support yesterday and am waiting for a return call. Hopefully they will have the answer.

What you need to find out is the MSB and LSB for your Korg and Kurzweil, The Yamaha Support people will not know those - don’t they have that information in the Manual?
