How to play a sample all the way through with just a key press.

So, I'm trying to duplicate the rain storm that's throughout Riders On The Storm. I'm thinking I'll need a few wav's that are different sections of a rain storm and then trigger them using a key in the lower register. I don't know how to do this.

First, how do I get them in as a sample? I don't want to have to load them in as audio each time I perform it. I'm assuming having them as samples are probably the best.

Then how do I set up my MODX so that when I hit a key the sample plays all the way through, not just when the key is down or if the sustain pedal is pushed? I just want to hit a key for one sample and have it play all the way through. Then hit a different key and play a different sample. These samples could be like 10 seconds long each.

I'm also assuming that once I have these samples I can then add them to a Performance so they are there each time I call it up?

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

The simplest way to do this is to use a Drum Part since drums have an option to play the sample all the way through without holding down the key.

There's a tutorial for Montage on older firmware that is still informative.

The option "Rcv Note Off" should be OFF if you want the sample to play all the way through when you let go of a key. When you let go of a key normally a "NOTE OFF" command is sent which will stop the note/sample. With this turned off, the "NOTE OFF" message is not sent.

Using samples within a Drum Part with "Rcv Note Off" as OFF is what does what was asked.

OMG! Thank you Jason! The first video got me 95% there. I needed to change a couple things and the second one made it perfect. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. And so easy!

One more minor thing. How would I get a sample to loop over and over and then stop when I hit a different key. I think the second video touched on that, where you set up another sample on another key and then somehow pull the first one down? Because of the translation I didn't quite get that.

What I'm proposing is to play a 10 second sample of rain over and over with the hit of key. Then when you hit a different key it stops the first sample and plays a sample like the first but it fades out.

After going over the second video I did see how to use Groups and got that working just fine.

How long is your sample?

I clearly stated it was about 10 seconds. The example you sent regarding Bad Mister is what Jason already sent with the above videos and was the 5% I needed to change.

I'm wanting to take a short sample and loop it over and over with a key press and let it loop forever until I press the other key in the group. That's what I'm missing.

Looped samples under drum control will loop forever if you turn off the "Key Off" setting like you do with long samples. Your task for these short samples would be to set loop points. MODX doesn't let you do this so you'd need some software to edit the loop points offline for the WAV or AIFF file before importing.

On the PC I use Wavosaur. And, really, this is all I use for this type of work. On the Mac Endless Wav is available although I haven't used it much. These are both free options.

Sample Robot, which was included with Montage (Montage Edition), allows you to do this too although is a bit clunkier for me. It may have appeal to others who aren't interested in the intermediate steps.

And then Melas tools have a waveform editor that should allow for this too.

After you have your sample looping - treat it like a long sample. Set Decay 2 time to "Hold" and turn off Key Off Receive. The sample will continue playing from loop point start to loop point end until shut off by something else in the group using those rules.

Likely you'll also want to have a key included in the same group that's your "panic" key (or "stop everything" key). This can be any sample - the default snare is fine. Turn down the level on this key to 0 so when you press the key all of the looping and held forever samples will stop and no new sample will sound because the level is set to 0 for this key.

You can also use sliders or even the main volume to turn these off before switching Performances. However, it may be good to have a "stop" key. It's up to you how to handle the end of the tune (or stopping the samples).

BTW: Fading out you have choices. You could have another key, same group, with instead of Decay 2 as Hold - have a slow decay time that matches your fade out. Or, you could have the exact same envelope settings (holding forever) on a different key and have that key trigger a motion sequence that changes the level slowly fading out.

I managed to achieve such a thing by creating a 4/4 2-bar ARP (pressing a key for 2 bars while recording) then apply this ARP to a specific part.
