MODX Connect cannot find MODX8

I have spent over 2 days trying to figure this out. I have MODX8 version 2.52.0, MODX Connect 1.1.0 on MacOS Big Sur 11.6. I also have the latest yamaha steinberg driver v3.0.5.

When I connect MODX to the mac, it detects MODX correctly, and I am even able to use it directly from Logic Pro X, but still MODX is not seen by MODX Connect. I have checked that I set MODX correctly as well. The MIDI IN/OUT is in USB mode. I have reinitialized all settings. Still no luck. Any thing I am missing? I have reinstalled the driver, modx connect, restarted mac a couple of times, and Connect will just won't recognise MODX. Help me please.

For details here because I tried troubleshooting with information found here.

Does MODX recognise the connected mac? Yes. I have a blue USB icon showing right between the keyboard and the tempo icons.
Does Mac recognise MODX? Yes. I have MODX listed as both input and output. Furthermore, I am able to record and use MODX within Logic Pro X with no issue

Remote settings on MODX: For a moment, I thought this was the missing puzzle. However, I changed "Remote -> Settings -> DAW to Live: Ch1", but no luck either.

I have also tried a direct USB connection between MODX and my mac, but no success.

I have also tried using MODX connect as a standalone app and as a VST plugin from Logic Pro.

Any idea what is wrong with my setup?

Hi Samuel,
Your screenshots do not backup what you say you’ve done… but since it does not concern MODX CONNECT, we’ll come back to it later.

When you say you are able to record to Logic Pro, are you referring to MIDI or Audio?
Must be MIDI, correct?
According to your screenshots you have no audio interface connected — you’re using the Mac’s built in microphone and built in speakers as your audio interface… (not recommended) but this should not interfere with MIDI communication between the MODX and MODX CONNECT.

I have also tried a direct USB connection between MODX and my mac, but no success.

Please use only a direct USB connection between the MODX and your Mac, especially when troubleshooting connectivity issues. Once you ensure communication is possible, then restore your hub and see if it then prevents communication. But definitely while troubleshooting please connect directly.

Please note: Apple Silicon-based Macs require Rosetta 2 for proper functionality. For more information go to this link — Rosetta 2 - Apple Support

Hi Bad Mister,

Thank you, for a super-fast response. I have learnt a lot by reading a lot of your responses here and watching your videos on Youtube.

Well, that picture was to just show that my mac did recognise MODX. Here is what the settings look like now when it's all set up (see attached image).

Regarding the ability to record in Logic Pro, I am able to record both midi and audio. See the image that shows audio signals from channels 7 & 8. The first 6 channels are from the Komplete Audio Interface.

I have the settings in Logic Pro using the aggregate audio interface (Komplete + MODX) as input and output.

I am using an Intel-based Mac.

Edit:
Information from the link you provided indicates MODX Connect V1.1.0 supports only Cubase on intel-based macOS 11 (see the attached image). Could this be the problem?

Please standby… we have folks looking into issues with macOS 11. (Intel)
We’ll pass on information ASAP.

Hello,

Sorry for the confusion on what is currently supported. At this time I can confirm that the AU component of MODX Connect does not work on Intel based Macs running Mac OS 11 Big because of an issue with Rosetta.

It works on Apple silicon based macs in native mode which doesn't need Rosetta. Our developers are aware of this and are working on a solution.

Again, apologies for the confusion. We will update YamahaSynth with more information as it becomes available.

.

Rosetta isn't a thing on Intel Macs. It's an emulation mode on M1 chips, only.

Tell your devs about #ifdef

They'll know what it is.

Hi Blake,

Yes, the AU component of MODX Connect doesn't work on Intel-based Macs. But, definitely not because of Rosetta, since Rosetta is required to run intel applications on only Apple silicon macs, not the other way round. Just like Andrew already mentioned, Intel-based Macs doesn't use Rosetta.

Is this solved?? If so where is the new version of MODX Connect?

I have exactly the same problem and only now by googling I find this one post where it seems MODX Connect doesn't work on Mac OSX Big Sur (Intel)
When I go to Yamaha's download side it mentions compatibility OS: Mac OSX 11
And it also mentions:
DAW Application
macOS 11 on Intel-based : Cubase 10.5 series / Cubase 11 series

I installed Cubase but MODX Connect doesn't work. (Cubase AND Logic "see" my MODX)

I am amazed that Yamaha doesn't warn it's users the MODX Connect app doesn't work yet on Mac OSX Big Sur.

Only now I found out here that "[...] At this time I can confirm that the AU component of MODX Connect does not work on Intel based Macs running Mac OS 11 Big[...]"

I am sure many Mac users have this same problem
