My Genos is shipping to my house today from SW in the US. About a month ahead of the original estimated ETA. I'll be able to compare the (2) side by side in the same studio environment and provide some feedback hopefully by the weekend. Is the Genos a T5 in a glorious new package or is it considerably improved sonically and functionally? I used to own the T5 but I sold it to buy the Montage so I do have some perspective although ideally having the T5 and Genos side by side would have been interesting. We'll investigate to see what Yamaha has been creating. I always have to get my CP1 out of my head because that piano is amazing. I have to keep my expectations down to a reasonable level.

Hi David! It is very interesting to know your impresions about the two. I also own Montage, and thinking about upgrading my Tyros3 to Genos. Looking forward to seeing your comments.
Some years ago I've done comparison of "equally named" drum kits on Motif XS and Tyros 3. I discovered very interesting feature: the drums by themselvs sounded almost indistinguishable, so one could say that the drums from "equally named" drum kits on Motif and Tyros are equal, if not the same.
In fact it's not the case. As soon as you start playing other accompaniment parts on Tyros, the Tyros' drums are losing their charm and I always keen to make them sound louder than other parts of the mix. The Motifs drums cut through the mix and the mix sounds much "pro". So they are different, even though I was playing the Motif through the "line in" of the Tyros3
I know it is a bit time consuming, but if you could do that to compare the Montage drums vs Genos drums, it would be nice. Just let me know if you interested, and I could share the way I did the test.
There are not many folks around who use the both: arrangers and pro-synths, so it would be nice to keep in touch. I also own Korg Kronos and PA4X, a few VA synths and so on.

I tried to work out a rough correspondence between Motif XF, Montage and Genos voices. The focus is on acoustic (non-synth) voices. The table and comments are at:

Takes a bit of informed guesswork since Yamaha does not publish a waveform list for the Genos, and they occasionally rename voices (mainly a T5 vs. Genos issue).

I wonder if the new guitar effects will be ported eventually to Montage? The T5's "Real Distortion" effects were added to Motif XF in an update.
Version 2.5 of Yamaha Expansion Manager was announced, including the ability to edit preset voices. In the past, YEM didn't support editing SA or SA2 voices. I don't expect any change in that regard.
So, WRT Montage and Genos being complementary, yeah. If you're a sound designer, Montage. If you're more into covers, Genos. It comes down to personal needs and process.

I plan to use the Genos at my church gig, so the review skews toward emulation of acoustic, orchestral instruments. It does quite a good job at this task. The styles and arranger stuff is for fun and practice -- not needed on the job.
