The new lfo effect is really cool. It does some instability things for sure

Some interesting updates, but not sure it is worthy of a 3.0 moniker. More of a 2.6?

The extended LFO adding a lot of "analog drift" sounded cool for sure. I was also impressed in the video where the CS80 and Montage were compared. Whilst different, I'd say he Montage held its own against this veritable legend.

Is there a fully list of the OS updates anywhere, and do we know when it will be released?

I think Dom also mentioned that the extended LFO is modulating the "analog oscillators". Maybe there is more to come in that direction?

2.6? Do you have any idea how much programming/coding had to go into that awesome pattern sequencer? I can almost guarantee that wasn't part of the Montage development roadmap, but they added it...because it was the most requested feature by a landslide. That update alone takes Montage into workstation territory; it's definitely a '3.0' update.

Finally real LFO's for Montage.
Really Great News!

Have personally missed this so much.
Hope there is Pink Noise, White Noise etc on the LFO too.
:p

Hi,

Yes, as I am a software developer myself. In the past I built my own hardware sequencer in a 19" rack for my first synth, a Yamaha CS15, and in the late 80s I wrote a software sequencer on an old 8 bit micro. 🙂

The new Pattern Sequencer will of course be important for those who want it, and they might think it worthy of a 3.0 moniker, but for me I never wanted/needed a sequencer on this performance synth in the first place. A 3.0 moniker for me would have been justified by something like an AN/CS sound engine. 🙂

And, of course, you cannot please all of the people all of the time. 😉

Just my personal opinion of course, and I am pleased that Yamaha have delivered a new OS update. I am pleased for those for whom the pattern sequencer meets their wants. I look forward to seeing how the extended LFO works out in practice. It sounded cool in the video.

I think the pattern sequencer was the best addition they could have made to the Montage; now it's competing with workstations- not just synths. It was a smart business decision based on the feedback they received from owners and prospective buyers. Everyone should be grateful to Yamaha. This keyboard now becomes a must have for many more studio-producers. The Montage needed a big update like this- just adding another synth engine wouldn't be enough to sway people from the new choices out now. If people want rehashes and remakes (like I've been reading) then they should look at tech from Behringer. Yamaha is still in the game of innovation, thankfully.

Mini filter.
I hope the mini filter steps only comes with the Super button and not with Envelops or other controllers.

Otherwise, it sounds really good. IMO.

Do you mean that or the opposite? I would be pleased it it can be controlled with LFOs or envelopes. Why would you be pleased if it has less than more possibilities to control it?

Did they mention the fixed receive midichannel issue? Are we allowed to change the channels in v3.0?

@Stefan

No, I mean.

The frequency jumps in steps on the video.
Is not smooth transition.

So I hope the problem is only with super knobb and not when using Env's, Lfo's etc.

Hi. The one thing I feel strongly and passionately about Yamaha is that they have a great heritage (my studio is stuffed full of it apart from a CS80, DX1.... 😉 ), but one trick they are missing is resurrecting some of their old tech in a modern platform given how good it sounds. Now that would interest me. Case in point is FDSP as found on the EX5 and missing in action ever since. Why develop something that sounds so great and then never build on it? As an adjunct to the AWM2 engine of the EX5 it breathed so much life into pads. Now, for sure,I have a lot of it in my classic synths in the studio, but I do not gig that. Ditto AN (AN1x) and VL (VL70). They still sound absolutely stunning. FM-X is superb, but AFM in the SY has tricks that FM-X cannot do.

I think you can be innovative, whilst respecting your heritage. A case in point is my Korg Kronos. It gives me Wave Sequencing in the HD-1 engine and it means I don't need a Wavestation.

I live in hope that a future update will include what I am looking for. In the meantime, you are correct in that there is plenty to celebrate in this one depending on what your priorities are. 🙂
