Recorded a PATTERN of 20 bars, which sounds correct. When I overdub the drums to add a cymbal from bar 10 in that pattern, the cymbal starts at the beginning. The bar/beat counter doesn't follow the fact that 20 bars are set for this section, and starts again after 4 bars which isn't correct in my humble opinion?
the version firmware: V1.11 (I don't use apple, so stayed at 1.11)

If you record a 4 bar Phrase, when you "set the Section length" to 20 bars, the 4 bar phrase will repeat 5 times. Permanently setting Section Length can only be done when you create a CHAIN. Pattern Sections will just loop endlessly if you do nothing... so Section Length is basically how long you let it continue.

What you want to do is record a 20 bar Phrase. Phrase Length can be set to any length from 1 to 256 measures. You must set the Phrase Length prior to recording. On the main Pattern screen: The measure counter defaults to 004 measures when you initially go to the Pattern mode... move the cursor to the extreme right to highlight the Length, use the data dial to set the Length BEFORE recording the Phrase...

Or you can append the length of an already recorded phrase using the APPEND PHRASE Job. The Pattern [JOB] called Append Phrase can be used to Copy the Phrase on to the end of itse, doubling its length.

You can verify the Phrase Length of the data you've recorded as follows:
From the main Pattern screen, press [F4] PATCH
Here you can see each of your Phrases in the current Section and their Phrase Length.
As you highlight a Track it will show its Phrase Length as M004 for four measures, M008 for eight measures.

Fault reason was that I copied a 8 bar drumpattern to my new 20 bar pattern. I solved it by making a song from the chain (PATTERN, CHAIN, EDIT, SONG) and played the cymbals there. To correct the pattern: I looked up the phrase # (PATTERN, F4PATCH), copied the ch10 drumpattern from 8 bars to 32 bars (PATTERN,JOB,COPY EVENT 4x), and that worked, thanks! Is there an easy way to remove or insert sections in a chain (PATTERN,F6-CHAIN,EDIT?

Easy is a very subjective word... there is certainly a way to do it. Using the COPY job for PATTERN CHAIN.

From PATTERN, press [F6] CHAIN
Press [EDIT]
Press [F2] COPY
You can COPY from any point to any other point and INSERT those measures at any point.

From PATTERN, press [F6] CHAIN
Press [EDIT}
Press [F3] SONG
You can CONVERT the entire thing to a blank SONG and then handle the INSERTION or REMOVAL of data in SONG mode.

You can re-record your CHAIN.
