Apologies for a few basic questions until I get the hang of my new CP4

What is the difference between selecting Performance 01 (CFX St which has no layer or split) and simply selecting AP1 - they sound the same. If they are exactly the same what is the point of Yamaha using up performance slot 01 for a single voice?
Is this the same with all performance slots that have no layer or split or have some of the "main" voices been altered in these slots?

Thanks
Tony

No apologies necessary... Thanks for the question!

It is not true that Performance A01 CFX St is exactly the same as the Voice under the Acoustic Piano 1 button... And this will explain what the thinking was... (Sure initially they appear to be the same.... But...

By definition, a CP4 Stage PERFORMANCE has three Parts: the Main (M), the Layer (L), and the Split (S)
What you are not yet seeing is this: not all Parts of a Performance have to be *active* initially. When you recall Performance A01 CFX St, the MAIN Part is active (the Main Part is always active) but the Layer Part and the Split Part are programmed but are "in waiting". This is done on purpose - it is programmed this way.

The Layer Part in Performance A01 is a String Voice (Strings 3), programmed to a particular Volume, with specific settings (effects, EQ, etc.) so that when you need it you simply press the [LAYER] button and it moves from "in waiting" to *active*.
Same with the Split Part which in Performance 01 is a Bass (AcousticBa), programmed with a specific Volume and pre-programmed Split Point, etc., etc.,... But it is "in waiting" until you press the [SPLIT] button, which activates it.

Just because the VOICES in the "L" and "S" Parts are not initially activated does not mean they are not pre-programmed. A Performance always has three PARTS. Just recognize that they do not have to be active (lit)... They can be left "in waiting" until you need them.

The individual VOICE locations are just that individual locations containing one Voice. Under the Acoustic Piano 1 button are the fifteen variations of the CFX Acoustic Grand Piano model. These are individual Voices... which can be used to build a Performance.

Please see the CP4 STAGE Data List (page 2) PERFORMANCE LIST. It will show you the 3 Parts in each of the 128 Performances. The active Part(s) is listed (white background), and the Parts "in waiting" are listed in gray background.

Hope that helps.

Oh now I get it!
If the manual had used your "in waiting" description it would have been obvious. Also I should have realized by looking at the Data List that every performance does have three different parts and the greyed out ones are "in waiting"
I wonder why Yamaha didn't just have all L and S parts either "in waiting" or switched on instead of the mix of options as programed.

BWT I have read through all the forum threads and you have a talent for giving very clear answers to the exact question asked. I get so frustrated with other forums where the contributors never seem to read the question.

That's easy... Because a person first approaching the instrument will not know how to program anything (it is assumed) so they may just hunt around until they find a Program that already is layered or already split. Besides, the programmers have had the time to work with the instrument and can assemble some useful examples of what can be accomplished.

All 128 PERFORMANCES are in "User" memory. None of them are permanent Presets. They all are just suggestions, just examples of what can be accomplished. The idea is for you (the owner) to learn from them, change them, overwrite them, customize them all, to your liking and playing style.

Think about it - wouldn't it be awful if Yamaha decided for you that all splits take place at F#2 and then burned that into permanent memory? What if you need the Split Point somewhere else?
That's why the Performances are all in "User" memory - so you, the user, can change them as you desire/require.

Thanks for the kind words.
