Probably wishful thinking - but on the Yamaha Syth homepage - their artist is wearing a Montage FMX shirt...

https://www.yamahasynth.com/

There was the MO - which was replaced by the MOX, MOXF...

There was the Motif which was eventually replaced by the Motif XS, XF, etc...

Could this be an "Easter Egg" showing us the new Montage is going to be called the Montage FMX...?

😀

[quotePost id=115904]More likely the FMX just refers to the FM-X engine that the Montage and MODX already have.
[/quotePost]
Could be... but it's the first time I have seen that particularly logo/design of the FMX...

And the fact that the MO and Motif, etc. added the FX to their replacements....

Just has you thinking - probably wishful thinking...

But the Montage is now ever 6 years old - the longest for a Yamaha synth in recent memory ... it needs to be refreshed.

it needs to be refreshed.

Hmmm - are you sure you didn't mispell 'replaced'?

Hopefully they will upgrade the internal architecture so they can fix some of the problematic functionalilty and better provide for future enhancements.

The whole world is going wireless (think 5g) - methinks it is time they got onboard that train.[/quotePost]

OK, sure, replaced 🙂

There is a whole host of things the need to be upgraded/replaced in the Montage - it was fine for 6 years ago - not so much today ...

Larger memory - SSD
Larger display (Genos), better contrast, etc.
Get rid of all of those buttons on the right side - replace them with something else.
Ban the 1970's orange/amber color LEDs from the entire keyboard!
Screen print the lettering onto the actual keyboard cover - instead of using (again 1970's) looking black tape from a name tag maker.
Better (latest) CFX, C7, Bosendorfer samples, etc. - built right into the memory, etc.
Along with several other technical upgrades...

Well, there is a start!

I personally hope they keep buttons like on the right side. Once you get used to them for switching/selecting PARTs, Elements, Operators, Mute/Un-Mate, etc., you won't look back, as it saves a lot of time and is much easier than pressing the touch screen to select those things. Also for when in Live Set, it's great to select Performances and change Banks/Pages...

However, I think people will be waiting years before the Montage is replaced, so I try to submit ideas that are doable with OS updates to the current existing hardware...

And the fact that the MO and Motif, etc. added the FX to their replacements

MO added X for XS and XF adding flash. Motif went ES to XS to XF. Not FX.

So whatever trend is suspected, I'm not sure anything matches historical product names.

The follow-ons are named generally for novel new features. Flash was a big one for sure.

ES apparently for Expanded System. XS I don't have official sources but XS brought XA (articulation controls). Seems like some recycling with E becoming X. Then XF was described before.

MO had no postfix in the ES generation when it was introduced. Then X (MOX) as an XS descendant. Then MOXF matching the Motif XF's flash based optional memory.

So I guess I don't see any tea leaves here.

I guess my problem isn't with the buttons themselves... it's the layout... color coding.... amber, both blue and white lettering, etc.

The right side button layout of the Motif XF was much cleaner looking.

To me the worst offense of the design in this area is the darker blue color on black background. The contrast is very low to see even with a lot of light. I think I posted a generic Ideascale to pay attention to contrast in labeling. There's an industry standard that was not respected (or possibly even considered).

However, the buttons - like anything else - require some amount of orientation to effectively use. They change modes under different circumstances. Mostly this is a good thing. Allowing aesthetics to dismiss the functions may cause you to miss out.

Totally agree.

No idea why they changed the color-scheme layout from what they planned (pre-production) to using the blue.

You can see in the attached picture (click on the small picture) that Yamaha was using everywhere when they announced the Montage back in 2016 - the now blue lettering was a light gray color - much more readable (and nicer looking)...

They also changed the light gray line going under the scene buttons - to now a blue.

And also changed the white line going through the master volume knob from a white to a now burnt orange/red.

The original layout looks much better.

In the spirit of all the "bring back the CS80" posts, I'd like the next Montage to have a long ribbon controller located above the keyboard, like the CS had. Oh, and a breath controller input, too!

Maybe I'm just a "control" freak!
