I am picking up my Montage 8 in a few days. I have been playing with it in my local store for 5 months. I noticed a link here for a DX7- FM Converter to take files from the DX7 and convert them to load into Montage.

However, I have an issue and maybe someone at Yamaha might see this. There are three other Synths in Yamaha's history that would sound stellar on Montage in Montage format. The SY99- CS6x, and FS1R. Ill add the CS80 here too. So 4.

I chose Montage, because it does not suffer the same drawbacks, as say a Korg Kronos. But to take a page from their playbook and convert some other synths, into Montage format would also change the game entirely. The platform of Montage sets the stage to launch other past synths and utilize them on board. And always "linked to the motion control sequencer" would make it that much sweeter.

Any thoughts here?

To me, except the SY99 which would be of great benefit, the rest are pretty much esoteric to concentrate on conversion for them in my opinion...

The problem with SY99 it uses a different architecture altogether. anyhow there's a wealth of DX patches online you'll never finish going through in a lifetime...

but if anyone hears this - sure! we will greatly appreciate additional conversion possibilities!

Montage doesn't have the "guts" to do (accept the result of) SY99 conversion since SY99 has a different engine with many incompatible capabilities. The operator input sources can be different. The FS1R has a whole set of operators unique to the FS1R. These other instruments you list are just too different. Everything branches out from the DX7 part of the tree - but those others are limbs of their own.

Even the DX7 has incompatible capabilities - but a much shorter list. So you lose a few things in conversion. However, there's enough overlap to warrant a converter.

FS1R have 8 FM operators same as Montage maybe it could be emulated ?

I have seen some great articles on FMX and how to convert Performances from other models...., but with FMX, my guess is to inventory what they put together, as the patches are pretty amazing out of the box. I don't know FMX yet, but learning the ability to mix and match seemlessly is just amazing sounding. I am going thru how to set up the scenes, arps, MC, SKnob, effects, DAW, etc... and the board is so deep. It sounds great, and seems ultra flexible, and powerful.

Hi, you can do good things with FM-X, each operator can have basic" waveform

Sine like on DX7
Add ==> Saw
Odd ==> Square
Res ==> Resonance

Saw, square and Resonance are used in Virtual analog synth, even if i will not said that FM-X is a virtual analog but you can emulate synth sound with it.

Take time to read the 4 Bad Mister great articles about FM-X :

As complement, for ready to use great FM-X sounds, Easy Sound have released FM-Xprience, it's a must have FM-X sound bank with also a "Smart Edit" way to learn what you can edit.

Here is my presentation page of FM-Xperience on my website Moessieurs, it's in French but you can use the google tool translator on top banner (not perfect translator but enough good to understand) :

The operators in the FM-X engine are definitely more capable than on the DX7, but it has to be said very very clear that FM has its limits when it comes to emulate a typical analog or VA synth and its oscillators. The Add, Odd or Res settings in the FM-X are nowhere near to a Saw, Square or Resonance sound in an analog synth. So, the typical synthbrass patch (like Jump for example) is impossible to recreate. I would be more than happy if somebody can prove me wrong.

Impossible is a pretty strong word for that. Consider that you can of course modulate each of the basic waveforms with others, that you have 8 operators per FM-X element, that you have all the effects and the filters at your disposal. And consider that you have 8 parts which you could combine you might be able to come pretty close. I did not manage to do it so far, but I am not sure if it is impossible, actually. Could be a nice challenge :-).

BTW: I have some sound named "Jupiter Brass" (not sure from where) which is the best emulation of the jump sound I have ever had on any synth or have ever heard from anyone else. But that's AWM2 probably with some samples from the analog synths, so a different topic.

Sladjan, i agree that the basic waveforms are not near a virtual analog and of course an analog, but you can do nice thing by modulate the carrier and like Stefan write use filters, FX, multiparts.

Not sure we can emulate the Jump synth sound but we can do interesting synths, lead , synth strings .... rater than the classical EP, Marimba Bell, organ synth bass
....typical sound that DX7 produce 😉

No question that FM-X can produce a wide variety of sounds which exceed what we typically understand when we say FM. I'm just saying that the operators do not reproduce the basic waveforms similar enough to a typical VA. So, for this kind of sounds (I mentioned the song Jump as an example) we have to use AWM.

While we are just debating, I'm asking myself, would it be possible for Yamaha create the typical sawtooth and square waveforms as part of the fm-x. The sine wave is already there. In that case maybe, the fm-x could have been used as a VA to emulate classic analog synths.

Looking like the FM-Xperience Easy Sounds is great learning tool, the videos show how FM-X Synthesis can be real time tweaked effectively using the assignments and faders. I like the idea of creating new sounds with a bunch of knobs to twist .... doesn't have to be Karn Evil 9, or anything else but just morphing and synthy :). I am having fun mixing acoustic and electronic sounds, and trying somehow to keep it organic sounding. FM-X and the Montage are a bit of beast to tame.... but I am loving the controls as I continue to work with board. Anyone else get this package?, and or create similar performaces ala the easy edits they use... to set up FM patches that can really be tweaked effectively for exploration. I am thinking that over time I might get FM-X enough to set up my own.... but this package seems very compelling :). Havent used paypal b4, but I might try it for Easy Sounds FM-Xperience.
