In pattern mode, I want to utilize several tracks of patterns and then use one track as a midi controller for an external device. I chose to utilize midi channel 16, and track 16 to control my external synth. my problem is that track 16 is still generating a tone (piano) while also triggering the external device. How do I make it so that it doesn't generate a tone and only acts as a controller? I've been through the manual, and I think I have a work around of sending the output of track 16 to something other than the left/right output channels, effectively muting the part, but I believe there's another way that I'm missing. In the meantime, I'm getting 2 sounds at the same time, which can be interesting, but I don't really want 2 sounds. I tried muting the part, but when I play the keyboard, its still generating sound. This is for a live music setup.

The reason you get confused is because you are not appreciating the difference between a Track and a Part.

The Track is a place that stores MIDI events and is a function of the Sequencer.
The Part is an instrument sound and is a function of the Synth Tone Generator.

You can MUTE a Track - which stops the Sequencer from sending MIDI Events
You can MUTE a Part - which stops the Tone Generator from responding

It is not clear from your post whether or not you are using the Sequencer to trigger the external device or not.
If not, then why aren’t you using the MASTER function?

MASTER Mode is designed for when using the XF as a master MIDI controller
