WXC Samples - How to deal with them?

Thanks to John Melas' Motif Waveform Editor I noticed that some Motif XF soundbanks contain an unusual sample format: WXC.

This format is apparently impossibile to open, visualize and edit, at least with the poor tools at my disposal.

Is there a way to overcome this issue?

What if I would create a soundbank for Motif XF that contains such encripted/protected samples?

Thanks

Hi Michele,

I guess you will have no luck in editing or creating WXC-based samples, as this special format is exclusively used in Yamaha-owened sound libraries, providing a certain compression algorithm in order to make large waveforms (e.g. sustained sounds without any loops) finally fit on the flashboards. The two Yamaha products I'm aware of using this format are the "CP1 Piano" library (freely available on Yamaha download site) and "Chick's Mark V" library (commercially available). I think I also found some waveforms in the free "Inspiration in a Flash" library, but I'm not sure.

However, I'm sure the format is not open to the public and was only foreseen to be used on the XF and MOXF models, but never on the XS. At least people complain that they cannot load any of these libraries on their XS, even if the library was converted and saved as X0A file using Melas Tools. However, some time ago the WXC format was also announced to be working on the Montage in order to provide more XF compatibility. But as pointed out, that format was never meant to be freely used by Motif owners; it's just there for playback. Believe me, I'd also appreciate if I could use it for my sounds in order to save some flashboard space :(.

Hi Martin!

Glad to hear from you. As far as I can see whe have similar needs, afterall. Wasting FlashRAM precious space is always not very pleasant, expecially when it's so expensive.

Anyway, I did my best to find your email address, in order to talk in private, but I wasn't able to find a clue. Would you be so kind to drop me a line to ...
Thanks 🙂

According to various discussions, WXC formats are only really available to sample houses which are given proprietary tools by Yamaha for generating samples which can take up less space than non-compressed samples.

WXC likely has some "special sauce" something that is difficult to just figure out even if you know the basic underlying principles of a related compression algorithm.

Just speculation, but I believe "WXC" stands for Wavelet Transform Compression.

You may have better luck with LPC (Linear Predictive Coding) - as this seems like it stands to be more straight-forward.

All of this also applies to the Montage as Montage currently "has" to use the Motif XF JM tools in order to manipulate samples and is also stuck without being able to even audition samples with LPC or WXC encoding. Therefore, the limitation of the tools you mention carry to Motif XF compatible instruments as well.

Thanks Jason for your insight. This means I'll have to delve into Motif Wave Editor to build newer waveforms for my Motif XF.... Until Montage will be at its side.
