So the drummer in my band has a Yamaha DTXpress III drum kit/module and wants to incorporate it into his real acoustic kit for live performance. How would it be possible to connect the S90xs and the drum module as an external controller to trigger sounds from the S90xs via midi?

Just to clarify the S90xs would still be being played by me but my drummer would be using midi to trigger other sounds (drums, bass hits) at the same time. I know that I can set up a performance to do this locally on the s90xs. From what i hear the synth would have to be setup in a MULTI mode to accomplish this? Is this the best approach?

Most importantly what parameters would I have to modify and adjust on the S90xs and what parameters should I found out about from the manual for the DTXpress III so the midi values are correct?

Thanks!

MULTI mode is the only approach to accomplish this.

What will be happening is you will be playing the S90 XS using up certain MIDI channels, while the Drummer will be triggering sounds setup on other MIDI channels. MULTI, gets its name from the fact that this is the only mode where the instrument can be addressed on multiple channels simultaneously.

VOICE and PERFORMANCE mode are addressed on a single MIDI channel. So they will not work for what you are attempting.

In MULTI mode you have 16 Parts, each Part can contain a different Voice, each initially on a different channel, 1-16. But you can freely assign Parts to any MIDI Channels.

You might want to setup so that you, as Keyboard player, have access to PARTS 1-8, and setup do your drummer is using PARTS 9-16.

The DTX Module will allow the drummer to output MIDI from different Pads on different MIDI channels. For example, using Parts 9-16, you can stack things on channels, and set the DTX to transmit MIDI events to those channels.

Connect the 5-pin MIDI OUT of the DTX to the MIDI IN on the S90 XS
In the S90 XS set MIDI I/O = MIDI
[UTILITY] > [MIDI] > set the MIDI I/O = MIDI

Are you using the "Yamaha S90 XS/S70 XS Editor Standalone/VST"?
I ask because it will help you with creating Drum Kits, etc.

Hey Bad Mister,
First of all, thanks for responding! To answer your question, yes, I was probably going to use the editor at some point. Any particular recommendations on how to utilize it for my situation.

I just wanted to recommend that you do, because it does allow a deeper level of editing than you can access from the S90 XS front panel.
I highly recommend that you experiment and find out what works best for your musical situation. The things that can be done will boggle the mind... the DTX can trigger chords, play bass lines, etc., have fun! Let us know what you come up with...
