Side Chain Modulation is common in EDM (electronic dance music) where the kick drum feeds a compressor “key” or “Side Chain.” The compressor is then patched to a pad or other sustaining sound. The compression effect works when the kick drum plays. When the kick drum plays, the compressor reduces the pad volume. This produces the offbeat “pumping” sound.
