It didn't take me long to realize that auto off won't work if there is a pending unsaved change (the "E" symbol) which is understandable. However it still won't work if you have a computer switched on that is connected via a USB cable. This restriction makes auto off less useful.

That's an opinion, not a fact. The concept of Auto Power Off is a planet friendly Eco-mode, designed to save the planet's energy (not your energy required to reach over and press the Standby Switch. Perhaps you are misinterpreting it's real purpose.

Just FYI, from your Owner's Manual.

NOTICE
β€’ The stage piano remains charged and draws a small amount of power even when turned off by the Auto Power- Off function. To shut it down completely, therefore, unplug it from the wall outlet.
β€’ In certain modes of operation such as when data has been edited, the Auto Power-Off function may not turn off the stage piano when the set period of inactivity has elapsed. We recommend, therefore, that you always turn off the instrument manually when you are finished using it.
β€’ If your stage piano is connected to other equipment such as amplifiers, speakers, or a computer, but you do not intend to use it for some time, we recommend that you turn off all devices as described in their owner’s manuals. Doing so eliminates the risk of damage to the other equipment. If you do not want the stage piano to turn off automatically when connected to other equipment, disable the Auto Power-Off function.
β€’ Any unsaved data will be lost when the Auto Power-Off function turns off the stage piano. Be sure, therefore, to store your work before it does so.
β€’ If the stage piano’s AutoOff parameter is set to β€œoff”, that setting will be retained when you import system data that was saved externally, regardless of the Auto Power-Off setting contained in that data. If, however, a specific Auto Power-Off time has been set using the AutoOff parameter and system data is imported, the Auto Power-Off setting contained in that data will be applied.
β€’ It should be noted that executing the Factory Set function (page 43) will cause the Auto Power-Off time to revert to the default setting of 30 minutes.
