Interface Voice Question - it won't remember (or is it me?)

I’m brand new to the CP4; played my first gig with it last nite, and love it: the action, the sounds, the real time dedicated graphic eq, all in all a reasonably slick package.

But, I’m having a serious user issue with the interface; I’m hoping it’s me and not the design.

First, the Performance Mode: main/layer/split is quick to access and I especially like how you can effortlessly blend and mix the instrument volumes using the sliders. A terrific Performance Mode feature is the ability to select and change layers (voices) on the fly within the selected Performance Mode.

Second, unless I’m missing something, that l voice selection is where I have a bit of a problem in terms of the interface design.

For example:

I set up Performance One with Main sound as CFX ST (AP1/001) and my Layer as CF Rock (AP2/007). This enables me to goose up the CFX with a bit more bite for solos, fills etc.

However, when I do an on the fly change to the “AP2/007 CF Rock” layer, and select ORGAN RotaryOrg (ORGAN 020) to replace CF Rock, everything is fine (note" I have not gotten out of Performance One - I only changed, but didn't save the layered voice, in this case an organ sound).

When I'm finished with the "Organ 020" and press the AP2 button it DEFUALTS to CF St (AP2/001) and didn’t remain at “CF Rock” so I either have to hit the up arrow seven times or turn the data wheel to return to CF Rock, or reload Peformance One.

And then to make matters even worse, when I press the Organ button again it won’t be on “ORGAN 020” it too would have defaulted back to ORGAN 001.

How can I set up “voices” in waiting? I want to press a voice button and have the voice I selected previously still be there.

For instance, there’s a very cool pedal steelish sound GUITAR/BASS 021 HawaiianGt. So before the band even starts I scroll to that number 21 finger pressure bendy sound that lives within the GUITAR/BASS sounds.

The song starts and I then press another button/voice, say EPIANO 1 and up arrow eight times to 008 “73RdTrem” and do some rhythm comps and fills in that voice and then I get ready to take a pretty crazy faux pedal steel solo & press the GUITAR/BASS key where my (021) steel sound is and low and behold the GUITAR/BASS sound defaulted 001 Nylon Gt 1 (along with EP1 008 dfaulting to 001 when I return to EP1). I realize that I can create a performance with Main EP1 008 and Layer GTR/BASS 021 --- but I want to do things on the fly and having a few preset "buttons" that I can quickly push for a previously selected sound would be very happenin.that way I can use those preslected buttons in either Perofrmance Mode to change layers or non-Performance (Main?) mode.

This has gotten a bit wordier than I expected; sorry about that.

If I were to put all this on a bumper sticker it would be:

I need a way for the CP4 to remember the last voice selected and not keep defaulting back to 001

……..or at least have a global menu option “LastVoiceRemember On/Off”

Like I said I got the keyboard yesterday, played with it most of the day, barely coming up to speed on the thing and then gigged with it that nite.

The overall experience was terrific. Thanks for any help or insight on this voice/select memory thing.

For each Voice button, you can pick your "Favorite" voice, which gets called up first whenever you hit that button. You can't edit any of the voices; you can only select your favorite one. From the owner's manual, page 23:

Setting your favorite Voices
The Voice selected first of all whenever you press a
Voice Category button is referred to as a “favorite
Voice”. By default, the first Voice from each category is
set as its favorite Voice; however, you can set your
own favorite Voices using the following procedure:
Select the Voice you wish to set using Steps 1 and 2
from Changing Voices above; hold down [SHIFT] and
press the Voice Category button for the selected
category.
The message “Favorite voice registered” will be
displayed on-screen to confirm your new setting.
NOTE If the category of the pressed button matches the Voice
category of the Part currently selected for editing, the set
favorite Voice will not be recalled.

That isn't quite what you're asking for, but might be helpful nonetheless.
