I have a new CP4, a UR242 and Cubase AI. I've added a MIDI track to Cubase AI with Steinberg UR242-1 as the input and output. The audio out on my CP4 is connected to the UR242 also. When I play the piano, I get MIDI data in, but no sound comes out of the piano. I'm using MIDI channel 1. I have the IN/OUT on the CP4 MIDI utility selected to MIDI, not USB. My computer running Cubase AI is connect via USB to the UR242. I would really appreciate some help. Thanks!

MIDI and audio are quite separate paths and you can follow the signal path as follows:

We assume you can see the MIDI ACTIVITY meter respond to your touches on the keyboard. This means your CP4 Stage is sending MIDI messages to the Track. We assume the MIDI OUT of that track is being routed back to the UR242-1 which is connected to the CP4 Stage.

Connecting headphones to your CP4 Stage should allow you hear the audio - turn Local Control = OFF in the CP4 Stage to avoid doubling of the audio signal. You need to route the audio from your audio interface (UR242) to your speakers.

We also suggest setting the channel of your MIDI track = "Any" if you intend to use the Layer and/or the Split Parts - they transmit on channels 2 and 3 respectively.

While not strictly speaking a CP4 Stage question, you need to check that your UR242 is properly setup as your studio interface.
DEVICES > DEVICE SETUP > VST AUDIO SYSTEM

And that monitoring is setup as prescribed by its documentation.

Thanks very much. It seems I have everything you mentioned set up correctly. I checked and to my surprise, I can hear audio on my headphones but not speakers. I have the speakers connected the UR242 line output and the Yamaha Speakers connected to the UR242 line output.

I assumed that if I fed a MIDI signal to the CP4, that it would automatically send the audio out of the headphone jack and the audio out jacks but it's only coming out of the headphone jack. Do I have a setting wrong on the CP4?

Everything looks OK in the UR242 device section.

I'm fairly new at this, so I appreciate your help.

You assumed correctly... Anything coming out of the CP4 Stage headphones jack IS coming out of the main left and right outputs. The reason I had you put headphones into the CP4 Stage was to prove to you it's working. And that your entire question is one concerning Monitoring setup of your Steinberg UR242... I'd just tell you where to set that up but I've never got my hands on one of those UR 242s (nice device).

Everything with your CP4 Stage is setup and working. If you have questions on using the UR242 contact Steinberg through your MySteinberg Account, I'm sure it's a simply setting. Or there are Forums over at Steinberg.net in support of their software and hardware.
