Hello to everyone. Im a little confused and i need your help.

I own a motifxs8 and communicates with my pc via firewire. I bought RME babyface sound interface but there is no firewire input on RME.

Should i keep it that way? I mean connected to my pc via firewire or should my motif be connected directly to my RME?

Thanks In Advance…

Welcome to Yamaha Synth... Don't know what to call you, whatever you typed did not translate.

The Motif XS8 came with a built-in FireWire audio/MIDI interface - all that is required to work with this is a computer that is either FireWire or Thunderbolt ready, and the correct cable and/or adapter.

The RME unit you mentioned is not able to read signal directly from the Motif XS8 via FireWire. The Motif XS connects to the computer direct on its own FW port.

You can use the RME as a separate audio interface for analog signals you want to input to your computer.

You neither mention a computer nor the software you are intending to use, so we cannot give you more information. But the Motif XS8 connects to the computer directly via FW - this gives turns your Motif XS8 into a 16-in/6-out audio interface for your computer.

The options for connecting both audio interfaces simultaneously to your computer or laptop will depend on the type of computer you are using.

Hello Bad Mister. Im really sorry that it took my so long to answer you. My name is Nick btw.

So. I own a motif xs8, and a RME babyface. The Daw im using is Cubase5. My OS is Windows 8.1 64bit. Im working on a desktop pc. I just want to use my motif xs8 as a midi instrument and also use motif effects like reverb release attack etc- Ive already connected via firewire and i also use my RME babyface. On VST Audio system can i use RME as an asio driver or im obligated to to use yamaha steinberg fw asio?

You are on a Windows computer, therefore, you must CHOOSE one of these two devices to be your ASIO (audio streaming) device... as Windows only allows you to select one audio interface at a time.

This is not necessarily a problem because you may not need to use them both simultaneously. You can use the Motif XS's FW connection to lay down your music tracks and then switch ASIO DRIVERS to whatever your RME Babyface requires when you want to overdub whatever you are recording through it. But as you can see within your software (on Windows) you can only select one device to be your audio interface.

Your workflow will include switching drivers - Cubase allows you to do this by going to DEVICES > DEVICE SETUP > VST AUDIO SYSTEM and selecting the device you require. The MIDI portion of the Motif XS's FW connection will continue to work whether or not you are using it as your audio interface. MIDI and AUDIO are totally separate protocols. But in order to record audio from the Motif XS via FW you will need to switch Cubase to the Yamaha Sternberg FW Driver (YSFW).

Again, MIDI to and from the Motif XS via FW will work whether or not you select the YSFW Driver as your ASIO Driver (because, again) MIDI is a totally separate protocol.

Thanks a lot Mister!

So should i use usb and forget all of this? Also i can play and hear vsts like omnisphere when i use motif but not motif xs as an external vst. There is no audio. DId i do something wrong? On output rooting of motif vst says motif xs vst (no audio). Is it because my studio monitors are conneted to RME?

In order to hear the Motif XS you have to connect it to your audio interface. You have two audio interfaces:
1) the Motif XS is an audio interface when you connect it and select it as your ASIO device via FW
2) the RME is an audio interface when you connect it and select it as your ASIO device via USB

But as I mentioned you can only use one of them at a time.

The device acting as your audio interface connects to your speakers. Make sense? An Audio Interface is responsible for getting audio INTO and back OUT OF the computer. According to what you've said that is the RME.

If your speakers are connected to the RME, then IT is acting as your audio interface. You should then:
1) within Cubase select the driver recommended by RME for that device
2) connect the analog L/R outputs of the Motif XS to your Rme (audio interface)
3) say you connect it to inputs 1 and 2 of the RME... Then in the Motif XS VST Editor, go to FILE > VSTi SETUP > select the RME's driver 1/2 for the top row of AUDIO RETURNS from the MOTIF XS going to the DAW (you can return the main L and main R of the XS to the DAW). This will remove the "(No Audio)" message from the top line of the Editor because you now have established an audio path for your Motif XS into Cubase via your audio interface. Make sense?

As mentioned MIDI via FW will still take place... Obviously, as you can play Omnisphere... So the XS is sending MIDI... you were not hearing the XS because you (gulp) didn't connect its audio to your audio interface. Make sense?

How many inputs on that RME?
Oh, by the way... Please correct you name in your profile ... I cannot/will not continue to address %u039D%u03B9%u03BA%

Thanks, πŸ™‚

Cool. %u039D%u03B9%u03BA%u03CC%u03BB%u03B1%u03BF%u03C2 it is!

No worries, Nick, as long as it's not your fault! πŸ™‚

You can additionally connect the two Assignable Outputs to your Audio Interface as additional Audio Returns. The Motif XS's Assignable Outputs can be used a Stereo pair or two Mono Returns, simply set the RME Driver ports in the appropriate slots in the Motif XS EDITOR VST. On the FILE > VSTi SETUP screen.

Never... I would never do that, sorry, if it even seemed like that. Glad you got that working! Enjoy!
