Does anybody know:
I have a Mox8 and a midisport 4x4 and a Behringer mixer-audio interface. Additionally, I installed Cubase 8.5.2, the vsti editor for mox80 (1.63), the remote tools (1.1.5) and the Yamaha USB driver (1.9.9) and the midisport driver (6.1.3).
I would like to midi sync the editor mox8 with the device mox8 over midisport (and not via the usb/audio interface of the mox). Is this possible (because I always get a communicate timeout error)?
I think it is dependent on the vsti editor only, (and maybe the remote tools, but everything else should be configured properly, too):
In USB details in VstiEditor port 4(?)I can select the 2 Midisport A ports A on which I have connected the proper Midi cables [see 2 in the picture].
In USb Details in the VStiEditor port 1, I can select MOX8 [see 1 in the picture] (I am not sure where this name is coming from, since I named all the connections in VST-Connections and Device Setup [Cubase] like 'Yamaha Mox8'. I
The editor stays offline and does not sync with Mox8 in one or the other direction.
Does anybody know?
Thanks!

I not really a beginner with midi and I think I conncted everything properl. I want to integrate the mox8 in my system, which so far is rather painful.
Well, your setup will not work. Here's why: in order to use the MOX6/MOX8 Editor VST, you must be using the "Yamaha Steinberg USB driver". And you must connect the MOX to your computer via USB. You will be using the MIDI portion of the Yamaha Steinberg USB driver. The Editor communicates Music data on Port 1 and uses Port 4 to address the Editor functions.
On the MOX Editor's FILE > SETUP screen (your screenshot) please set the Port 4 MIDI IN and MIDI OUT options to the MOX8 Port 4 of the Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver. You don't create the names, the Driver does. The Port 1 MIDI OUT device is your MOX8. This is the Editor addressing your hardware MOX8.
Make sure your MOX is set to MIDI I/O = USB. That will take care of MIDI communication.
For Audio: since you don't want to use the MOX'S 4 channel (dual stereo) audio interface, you must set the audio portion to address your external audio device. Here's how:
Set the MOX to "1StereoRec". That translates to "single stereo record out" 2CH. You will not be able to use 4CH, because you will be connecting just the main L&R outputs to your external audio interface. (If you want to use the 4CH (dual stereo outputs) "2 StereoRec" you'll have to eliminate that external audio interface).
If you wish to use an external audio interface, connect the L&R 1/4" Outputs of the MOX to a pair of inputs on that device. Then, select the driver for that device in the MOX Editor by going to FILE > VSTi SETUP > select the driver for your audio interface here. Connect just the first pair of Outputs, and set it to match the inputs on your external audio interface.
Any reason you are not using the MOX as your audio interface?
Thank you for the very comprehensive answer. I did not know that the editor is dependent on the Yamaha driver, but I have not yet red too much about the MOX8 in general. I just got it.
In principle, I have nothing against the audio interface of MOX8, but I have already a mixer with an audio interface on which I have other equipment.
I can now connect the mixer to the mox8 or vice versa and my first try was to stay with the mixer interface.
My second try with the Yamaha audio interface and therefore using the yamaha driver works.
One thing does not work with me: use both audio interface and connect the mox8 to the mixer= interference noise.

Ground noise can be an issue when you have multiple pieces of gear interconnected. Where you plug things in (physical sockets) and, of course, the computer is often susceptible to introducing noise to your system. Does the noise change character when you use the mouse or ask the computer to search for something?
No it did not. But I have changed my setup in order to use the MOX8 Audio interface. It it is working well. Thanks again.
