When you back up approx how big should the file be - I know this depends on what you have on there - just looking for general - I read that there's 5 GB of data coming from the factory but my backup file is just a little less than 4 - is that normal?

Factory data is NOT included in your BACKUP File.
The BACKUP File includes all USER data and user installed data (Libraries), plus your Song/Pattern Folders...
