Further question on MODX drum kit maps in the Data List document

I'm getting to understand how to create drum maps using the process created by Michael Trigoboff. However, the Data List pdf supplied by Yamaha is confusing: in addition to the drum maps of the older kits that I have on my MX synth, the only other lists of kits are given odd names like Schlager Weapon 1 and Early 80s DiscoPop, which are not drum kit names in the MODX. I don't know what they refer to but I can't find in the Data List the kits that the MODX brought with it such as New Maple Custom Kit or T's EDM Kit. This is confusing. Where are these kit lists so that I can convert them to drum maps?

That is making sense. Thank you. I wish Yamaha hadn't designed the MODX like this, but I must take what they give, now that I've bought the thing. A particular nuisance, as many others have pointed out, is the inability to choose MIDI channels for Performance Parts. For drum Parts, that is especially a pain because the convention has long been to keep them on MIDI channel 10. So if a Performance has Drums on channel 4 as in Schlager Weapon 1, I have to adjust my DAW settings; browsing different Performances with drums on varying MIDI channels is more fuss than pleasure.

Now that you point it out, why don't I hear the drum sounds in Schlager Weapon 1 on MIDI channel 4?

If you want drums on MIDI channel 10, swap the drums to Part 10. SSS will be deactivated but that may be OK for you. I personally don't use SSS.

Init Multi/GM places drums on Part 10.

The major disadvantage of the current system is that you cannot have multiple parts respond to the same MIDI channel arbitrarily. You can set Parts 1-8 to the same MIDI channel - but you cannot have multiple groups. Like Parts 1-2 the same MIDI channel and Parts 3-6 a different but also single MIDI channel. It would make the platform more intuitive if you were allowed to set multi-Part instruments to a single MIDI channel arbitrarily and this can only be accomplished generally by setting the MIDI receive channels for each Part (which doesn't, and arguably won't ever exist).

If "all" you're concerned about is standard GM drum mapping then you can make this happen using shortcuts and employ the Part Copy/Swap feature. Then [STORE] your User version.

At some stage, it might be worth your time to create your own "Drum Kit". It is surprisingly easy.

When you Edit an existing Drum Part or Drum INIT, you will see down at the bottom of the screen the "default" Drum sounds.... BD, KD, SD, HH etc.

You can open each of these and change the Drum Sample in there... to whatever other sample you like, but most probably, a like for like. For example change an "Oak Bass Drum" for a "Beech Bass Drum" etc.

The Waveform Category Search makes things a little easier. Drums are Filtered in search by the Main Category "Drum/Perc", and then the Sub Categories are the usual suspects... Bass Drums, Snare etc. The sample "Name" usually gives you an indication of the content (BD, SD etc) but not always.

Using the Data List Manual can help you cross reference Drum Samples with what you may have actually heard in a Performance e.g. a Cuica.

Also, it's not always Drum Samples you hear in a kit. Sometimes they are odd/obscure Samples found in other Categories e.g. Sound FX ... beeps, boops, glitches etc.

You can sometimes get the sound you want by "tuning" the sound you have, e.g. Handclap... tune it "up" for a brighter Clap with more Attack.

IMO you will get better results, a lot faster this way, than by "auditioning" whole kits, hoping to find one that fits. In other words, it's easier to find single sounds that fit.

Going on one further from Antony's comment about creating your own Drum Kits, I make kits based on drummer's kits, however mainly based on cymbals as I've yet to find soundfiles from drum manufacturers. Paiste cymbals website have sound files of all their different types so for eg Stewart Copeland of Police I download the mp3 files ie Signature 12" Micro Hat (open, closed, chick); 2002 14" Flanger Splash (choke, edge) etc. I then load the waveforms into John Melas Montage Waveform Editor and convert them and load into the Montage.
I have also done this for the Low and High sets of Tama Octobans and Rototoms. You can also edit the waveforms so that you get a 'choked' Crash cymbal sound. Obviously the standard waveforms are based on the Yamaha Oak/Maple kits etc
