I find that the stereo images on piano libraries are very wide, always as if we were in player position.
I can understand that choice of sound design, but sometimes i'd like to have the stereo image much narrower, emulating audience position, or same directions (bass left, treble right) but more centered and focused.

You are correct, many of the factory acoustic pianos are designed to place the player in the player’s position at the instrument when initially recalled... which is extremely piano-centric. From a recording engineer’s view the piano does not always need to be the center of musical attention ... this positioning function is extremely programmable on the MONTAGE/MODX.

What you are dealing with in many of the factory acoustics is, first, a stereo Waveform set. You can narrow this a bit by editing the instrument... However, fortunately, the instrument provides you with a comprehensive set of acoustic piano Waveforms.

The “CFX Concert” and the Bosendorfer Library’s “Imperial Grand”, for example, both utilize the Super Knob’s ability to adjust several parameters simultaneously to reposition the listener. In general, the Super Knob at minimum, you are sitting at the piano in a tight practice room, as you increase the Knob you are simultaneously changing the Rev Time and EQ parameters, the result is you move the listener farther from the instrument and more toward the back of the hall... The MW adds to the illusion softening the attacks.

The Super Knob, here, is not used as a real-time control, it’s more of a ‘choose your listener’s position’ and lock it in... the following article will give you a hint on what parameters are in play — and will make for a good starting point.
