After several hours of research and trial-and-error, I cannot use my MODX as a multi-timbral tone generator. My DAW is Cakewalk. My midi interface is M-Audio 4x4. My other modules are MOXF6, PSR970, Roland XV5050, Korg X5DR, etc. For example, I want port 4, midi channel 1 to be a MODX String sound, midi channel 2 to be a MODX Guitar sound, etc., using LSB/MSB/Patch info. I use song mode on my MOXF to accomplish this, but don't understand the equivalent on the MODX.

MIDI I/O is set to MULTI. I recorded 2 tracks, one assigned to MIDI channel 1 and the other assigned to MIDI channel 2. I only hear playback for the one assigned to MIDI channel 1.

I think I am trying to have one Performance and send program changes to each of the 16 parts. Is that correct?

I would really appreciate any help on this. If I am missing some info you need, let me know!

MIDI I/O is set to MULTI.

When you set the MODX to MULTI, each Performance is exactly like the MOXF in a Song/Pattern MIXING. A good starting point for you would be to take the following steps (it will help you understand the MODX with your knowledge of the MOXF).

STEP 1: From the HOME screen, press [CATEGORY]
With “Bank/Favorite” = All , and “Attribute” set to All, select “Init” > “Multi/GM”

This sets up a MIXING with a “placeholder“ instrument in each of the 16 Parts — similar to how recalling a blank Song or Pattern would on your MOXF. It is also called "Mixing" on the MODX.

STEP 2: Touch “FX” on the very top line of the screen
Set the “KBD CTRL LOCK” = ON

This will allow you to *select* an instrument per Part, 1 through 16, and makes it so that each sounds one-at-a-time when you tap them to *select* them— similar to how you work in the MOXF.

STEP 3: Return to HOME
In order to setup to select Instruments in this fashion... you *select* a PART by tapping the “Type/Name” box corresponding to the Part number.
For example, tap the "Type/Name" 1 box - it highlights.
Press [SHIFT] + [CATEGORY] --- You use Shift+Category when looking to replace just a single Part.
The top line of the screen will indicate you are searching for “Part 1—Category Search”
This will allow you to replace *just* Part 1.
Set your “Bank/Favorite” to All
Set your “Attribute” to Single

Now when you search for an instrument to replace the “placeholder” you will be able to do so with a selection of Single Part instruments (Single instrument sounds are green)

(In this configuration you can send a Bank Select MSB/LSB and Program Change on each channel as you require, or simply use the on board search function. When working like this your MSB will always be 63, the LSB will be a value representing the MODX bank).
You can now send a message to select the instruments you desire.

EXTRA CREDIT:
Each a Single Instrument Performance will begin with MSB 63... This allows it to be used in any of the 16 Parts of the Multi Part Performance by Channel... and you can look-up what MSB/LSB and Program number as follows.

When viewing a Single Performance in the MODX screen.
Select the PART 1
You do so by tapping the box Type/Name corresponding to that Single instrument, tap Part 1
The pop-in menu appears > tap “Property” to view the details

Please Note: You do not have to send MSB/LSB and PC to the MODX, you can setup your MIXING multi, then Store and Name it, and recall the entire Performance as a unit.
The set of 16 Parts in this Performance can be recalled as a group...

Thank you sir! Although I still have some investigating to do, I was able to create a performance using the Multi/GM template. I then looked up the program change info for a sounds, entered them in my DAW, and it works great. (I do wish the manual contained the MSB/LSB and PC info, like the other Yamaha products).

You have unstuck me for now, and I appreciate it. As I get deeper into it, I might be back!
