I made this video to show the bizarre behavior which probably has a simple explanation, but for a basic musician who tries this out, what would they think?
I love the Bosendorfer sample on my MODX7, but I recently bought a Roland GO:Piano 88 which has more keys. I would like to be able to play classical music sometimes, but the MODX8 and Montage instruments are TOO HEAVY so I thought 'why not play the MODX7 from the Roland?' I normally have a WIDI Jack hooked up to my MODX7, and the Roland has Bluetooth too, but when I tried it out, bizarre behavior. I thought at first they were too far apart (not something that seemed too likely to me, based upon a few years using WIDI). So I brought the MODX into the living room, but the result was the same.
Then when I played the demo on the Roland, it doesn't send MIDI notes but apparently it sends a program change, and then the WIDI was working fabulously.
Probably the Bosendorfer sample set is receiving on multiple MIDI channels, or something like this.
Nothing bizarre, working exactly as intended.
Most of the legacy Montage and MODX(+) performances (patches) are multi-part, all of the Bosendorfer included, and each part receives on it's own fixed MIDI channel. You can change that in Utility > Settings > Advanced > MIDI I/O Mode, set is to Single and choose the MIDI channel on which your controller is submitting data.
Try using a MIDI cable instead of BlueTooth to see if that makes a difference. Try testing one of the other performances from the Bosendorfer library file and see if any of them have the same issue.
I have the Montage version of the Bosendorfer performance and don't use BlueTooth so can't really try to reproduce your exact problem.
But the Montage version has three parts and they are all internal parts with Keyboard Control ON and it works fine.
The problem is that the Roland is likely sending only one channel of MIDI and various Performances on MODX require up to 8 channels of MIDI to be sent from an external controller to sound complete. This is the behavior when MODX is in multi-channel MIDI mode.
The easy fix is to change MODX to single channel MIDI mode. Then set the MIDI I/O channel to match the Roland's MIDI transmit channel.
When it seems to work better (in Multi Channel mode) you would be using a Performance that doesn't require an external controller to send MIDI on multiple channels to sound complete.
CFX Stage is an example of a Performance that only utilizes one MIDI channel. It's a one Part Performance. The [CATEGORY SEARCH] has an option to display only Single Part Performances and all of these would have worked with a controller that only transmits one channel at a time. Also, all Performances that are single Part are a displayed in a unique color. Green vs. blue.
Switching to single channel mode is probably the easiest solution rather than restricting to single Part Performances or figuring out how to make your external controller transmit multiple MIDI channels at once (sometimes called zones).
