Hi! I own a Yamaha MODX8 just recently and I'm trying to record on the MODX8 without a DAW. I have seen the tutorials and even read some of other people's replies but it didn't manage to answer my question.
So basically I manage to record a track first but when I want to record over it, I can't. I know I have to set the Record Type to "Overdub" but it does not give me the option to. I have read other people's problems with this and the replies to them but still don't understand what I need to do. I was hoping someone could guide me step by step to what I'm doing wrong. Hope somenody can help soon, Thanks so much.
We’d be happy to... just a few things first...
Did you update your MODX8 to 2.00?
Are you attempting to record MIDI Song, or Pattern?
What is in the Performance you are trying to record?
Let us know.
The “RECORD TYPE” parameter only appears after you have recorded data to the Song or Pattern (that is, Overdub is only an option when you are adding data to existing data).
Extra Credit: The Play/Rec function in MONTAGE/MODX is properly called a Performance Recorder. As the article points out, each Part has its own dedicated MIDI Track. When you place the Performance Recorder in RECORD, it will record what you perform, and because each Part has its own Track, when you are performing and a Part is sounding it gets recorded to its dedicated Track.
It would be proper to say when you put the unit into RECORD, whatever you perform gets recorded. If you have been playing the instrument for a time now, you must realize that in some Performances not all Parts are sounding at the same time, you can bring in Parts with various Controllers (Super Knob, Assign Knobs, MW, Foot Controller, etc). If you switch *selected* Parts while the Recorder is operating... what you hear is what gets recorded.
The original Recording is laid down, all Parts that you engaged, will be recorded to their dedicated Track. If you press STOP, and then seek to add something to your original Recording, you must set the “Record Type” parameter to “Overdub”. If you don’t you will be “Replace” recording... which erases previous data. “Overdub” adds new data to existing data. This is why you do not see the “Record Type” option until data exists in the sequencer.
Hello Bad, In your above post, you mention that in the MODX8, the record type button will show up after having recorded data to the Song or Pattern. I am only experiencing it showing up when I record data to a Song . There is no Record Type button (for Loop or Overdub) that I am seeing when recording data to a Pattern. Please let me know if I am seeing this correctly. Thank you.

Correction on my last post ... I meant to say "punch in and punch out" instead of "Loop"
I just tried it and do see the "Recording Type" button.
Turned on instrument. Press the record square button. This brought me to the record menu and the default was already Pattern record - so I left that alone. Pressed the play button to start recording. Played a few notes to be sure there was something in the pattern sequencer's buffer. Then pressed stop. In the far right hand side of the screen second row under "Click Settings" there was a "Recording Type" button which I could either pick "Overdub" or "Replace". After pressing the stop button, I didn't navigate anywhere. I didn't touch anything else. I just tapped on the "Record Type" button and saw these two options. Which you pick for the "mode" of the next recording. If you exit the screen or press the wrong things then it's possible the next time you try to record it starts over with an entirely new recording instead of keeping the previously recorded material. Not saying that's your issue - but a possible pitfall.

Record Type
Determines the Recording Type. This parameter is not available for the first recording.
Settings: Replace, Overdub, Punch
Replace: You can use this method when you want to overwrite an already recorded Track with new data in real time.
The original data will be erased.
Overdub: You can use this method when you want to add more data to a Track that already contains data.
Previously recorded data will be maintained.
Punch: You can use this method when you want to overwrite data to a specified range of a Track that already
contains data. It allows you to overwrite the already recorded data from the starting point to the ending point
(measure/beat) that was specified before recording.
