What is the normal note range of a 61 key synth. ie: modx8 is A-1 to C7
It depends on the Synth, but you typically get the C3 to C4 Octave in the middle.
With Synths though, it's generally a moot point because with "Oscillator" Synths, the Pitch you hear depends on the Octave/footage of the Oscillator(s).
Thanks Anthony, Just kind of wanted to know that if Im writing a midi song/pattern on my modx8 and give the file to someone with a montage6 what notes would be out of range.
They wouldn't be out of range if being played by a MIDI File.
If you were writing a piece that had to be played with two hands full time... then you'd need to keep it within a 61 Note Range.
A MODX6 goes from a C to C physical layout.
A MODX7 goes from an E to a G physical layout.
I found this just by searching Images of each in Google.
EDIT: Just politely checking... do you realise that Synth Keyboards can be transposed?
Thanks Bill, I do know about transpose and pitch shift. Was just curious that if in my pattern that started a two octave run in Am starting at A1, on a montage6, the low A and B wouldn't play and will just pick up the C and continue on from there.
Talking in circles here.
Using a typical 61 Key Keyboard as an example.
Out of the box, just powered on, and with no Keyboard Octave Transpose being used, the Playable Pitches on the Keyboard are, starting from the leftmost key....
C2 to B2
C3 to B3
C4 to B4 (C4 = "Middle C"), (A4 = 440Hz "Tuning")
C5 to B5
C6 to B6
C7 is the last "highest" key, furthest right.
In Summary, you have 2 Octaves above, and 2 Octaves below, the "Middle Octave" C4 to B4.
A Synth can still "play" lower and higher Octaves by "shifting" the Keyboard up or down. If you moved down 1 Octave (-1 Octave) the physical Keys would now play...
C1 to C6
-2 Octave Transpose
C0 to C5 (For Bass parts etc)
The Keyboard is just a Physical Input device for addressing the Sound Engine, aka Tone Generator, aka Synth Engine.
MIDI is another form of input that does not need Keys.
MIDI can play notes above or below the current physical Key range, as long as the Sound Engine supports it. This is irrespective of the current Keyboard Octave setting.
In short, if you make a MIDI Piano Scroll on Montage8, using all the keys, a MODX6 can still "read and play" that Piano Scroll, without even touching the Keyboard.
@Bill... good point. Yamaha and its quirks.
C4 is however defined as the pitch @ frequency 261.63Hz, also the "C" immediately below "Concert Tuning A = 440Hz".
This is all just preamble however.
@Rockin wants to know if a Piano Scroll made on the Montage8 will play on a Montage6 regardless. The answer is "YES".
Your MIDI file will access any of the 128 notes it wants to no matter which Montage or MODX you use (6, 7, or 8).
