PA-150 vs. PA-150B

My MODX came with a PA-150B. What exactly is the difference between this and a PA-150? All the specs appear to be identical but I can’t find any info on what the ‘B” is supposed to signify. I’m going to go ahead and buy the PA-150 as a spare/backup anyway but I’m just curious why there are two PA-150 supplies.

Thanks

Hi Norman,
Thanks for the question. The PA150B differs slightly from the PA150, in that the “B” has a detachable plug section that can swapped for one that matches the wall receptacle (sold separately), if you travel internationally.

Hi Bad Mister,

Thanks for clearing that up. While we’re on the topic of power supplies, in what way(s) would a dodgy power adapter affect normal operation of the synth? I mean, other than the obvious symptoms (i.e. losing power completely, etc.).

Thanks

There is never a reason to use anything but the recommended power supply.
In what ways would eating a dodgy meal effect you and your performance? Wrong power supplies can lead to permanent instrument component damage.

There is more to the power adapter than the correct voltage... if you don’t know that, then, please, stay away from “dodgy power supplies”... if you’re lucky you’ll only lose your Synthesizer, worst case you burn the house down, and/or get hurt.

Recommended: MODX owners should always keep a spare in their keyboard bag or case!

Thanks for the reply. By ‘dodgy’ I didn’t mean other supplies, I was referring to a ‘marginal’ PA-150B - still the original supply. In fact, I would never plug in anything other than the correct supply! I have a PA-150 as backup.

The PA 150 is a 12 volt DC, 1 amp power supply.
The PA 150B is a 12 volt DC, 1.5 amp power supply = 50% more current.
You can photos of each on the net to verify.

The manual states that the MODX draws 16 watts of power.
Using a simple power formula found all over the net:
12 volts @ 16 watts equates to a 1.333 amp draw - more than the PA 150 can deliver.

2 questions:
Why is there so much misinformation about this?
And why is the PA 105B not available in the US?
I did find one on ebay for $51 though!

I bought an properly spec'd adapter on Amazon:

Phillip,

I'm here because I had the same question. I have a spare 150 from my MOXF.

I just looked at the 150 and the 150B. Both of them say 12v 1.5 a output. Are you sure your 150 says 1 amp?

The Yamaha PA-150 can be substituted for the PA150B.
